1 Diane’s analysis
Step 1: Obtain the relevant facts:
• Diane does not have the knowledge to conduct the audit
• Diane and her assistant, Will, have limited time to finish with the audit
• There is a company policy to record all work hours
• At day three, they have not done any progress in the job
• To be able to finish the audit job without going over budget they will have to work extra hours without recording them
Step 2: Identify the ethical issues from the facts:
Is it ethical for Diane to continue being the senior auditor for Northco Power?
Is it ethical for Diane and Will to work extra hours without recording them?
Step 3: Stakeholders affected:
a) Diane: being asked to perform a job for which she has not enough knowledge; hours of work will be affected; pay will be affected; may lose her job; performance review may be affected.
b) Overhouser & Rice: work policy may be violated; may do its client, Northco Power, an injustice; may reward employees inaccurately.
Step 4: The alternatives:
a) Withdraw from the audit job
b) Work the extra hours and report them
c) Work the extra hours but do not report them
Step 5: Consequences of each alternative:
a) If Diane withdraws from the audit job she may lose her employment with Overhouser & Rice or may get a negative performance evaluation. Overhouser & Rice may not be able to finish the job for Northco Power and may lose a client. However, this may give Randy the opportunity to analyze his current way of assigning his head auditors to each job. Therefore, this could enhance performance for future jobs and increase profits.
b) Diane admitted that the hours for this job were fairly allocated. If Diane works the extra hours and reports them she may lose her employment with Overhouser & Rice or at least, depending on the firm’s policy, have a poor performance evaluation. This also will…...

The company controller, Jim Dietz, wants to include the loss as an extraordinary item on the income statement. The Cranor Corporation has been growing consistently over the past decade and now this year will have a loss. The company controller doesn’t want to have a loss on the income statement because it will affect their stock price in the stock market. The problem is product recall is an infrequent event, but it is not an unusual event, so it can’t be classified as an extraordinary item. The company chief executive officer has been made aware of the loss and the decision that Jim Dietz wants him to make concerning the loss. The chief executive officer must make the decision as to whether to place the loss under the extraordinary item or list it as a loss in net income for the company. This patient that has called in could be on restriction from receiving these medications he has requested and found a chance to get a refill because a new person took the phone call. There are questions to be asked when trying to understand the situation that the patient gives.
