Devil in a Blue Dress: Themes In the devil in a blue dress, written by Walter Mosley some of the main themes are prejudice and freedom. Racial prejudice is prominent throughout the entire book. The word “nigger” is constantly being used throughout the book in both a friendly manor and a demeaning one as well. The white men in this story use “ nigger” to display their power over the black characters. In the story, the black man is always to blame and they are the ones who have to work extra hard to remain existent.
The constant owner-slave relationship is being displayed throughout the interactions between African Americans and the white folks. Every white man in the story has power over every black man in the story. They use their color to get what they want. As soon as Easy is able to walk away from each white man including- Ricardo, Mr. Albright and Michael Teran, he is given a new sense a freedom. In a way these men were his slave-owner and each time he refused their power and he was given freedom. Just like slavery when it was most prominent, black people had to fight their way to survive. All the black men in this story are doing just that. Each time someone is killed it represents the killer doing something to try and help himself to survive. Freedom is represented by Easy’s house as well. Easy owning property does give him some kind of social status in this racist world he lives in. Racial prejudice also brings people together in this story as well. Easy’s relationship with primo is an understanding that both of them live in the world of the white man. They both are treated with disrespect from the same type of man and that understanding brings them together as friends. Another theme in the story is sexual perversion. The readers are first given an insight on this sexual perversion when Easy runs…...

Blue Devil

...2005 “The Blue Devil” I remember when I was a child my mother owned a very special family van. It was a blue Chevrolet Astro that took us everywhere we needed to be. Every morning, on the way to school, he would fly in the air as we went over the speed bumps in the road. I couldn’t wait until the next morning to do it all over again. I’d fallen in love with this van until he started to change on us. He started to surprise us in the most evil ways he could think of and as a result, we started to call him the blue devil. Every summer our family would drive to South Carolina for a vacation. The blue devil did fine on the way to our destination, but when we were leaving he gave us a very hard time. The air condition wouldn’t work and it was a very hot summer day. He knew that we needed the air conditioning but he wanted us to suffer in the hot sun. Everyone was burning up from the heat. My mother tried to turn the air condition back on, but he wouldn’t allow her to. We started to open the windows so we could get a breeze, but it would only row down half way. While we were still in route to our home the blue devil had another surprise for us. The right rear tire suddenly blew out and the blue devil started to swerve all over the road. We finally pulled onto the shoulder and stopped. We spent about an hour and a half in the hot sun while my stepfather changed the blue devil’s tire. I was scared to ride in the blue devil again after what had......

The Dress

...The Dress The author of this short story is Julia Darling, and it was published in 2006. The Dress is about a strained relationship between the two sisters Flora and Rachel, and their relationship to their mother, who cannot handle the two sisters as good, as she can handle her job as bereavement counselor. The background to the conflict starts is a stolen silk dress, and escalates on the restaurant, where they are celebrating the mother’s birthday. This ends in serious consequences. Rachel goes to live with her father and Flora gets kicked out of the house by her mother. The main theme of the short story is family relationships with the sub-themes of jealousy and troubles of being single parent. The narrator changes between a 3rd person narrator and 1st person narrator, but mostly it is a 3rd narrator with an omniscient view, because the omniscient narrator is “zoomed” in on the persons. The narrator knows everything, and the reader knows how the girls think about each other for instance “It made her feel, taller, braver, cleverer, and Rachel was all those things already.” (Lines 36-37), which indicate that Flora, perhaps, is a little jealous of her sister. The story starts out with that the reader hears that Rachel stands in a dark hallway in the house, which gives the in Medias res effect, where the reader dumps straight down in the story. The story’s time is chronological as it lasts from morning to evening, but the structure of the story is not chronological,......

The theme in the text, is particular the relationship between the 2 sisters, Flora and Rachel, but also their relationship to their mother. Dress

...How to Dress with Style Approximately 1,353 words Everyone has something they’re good at: whether it’s writing, playing sports, cooking, dressing and so on. For example, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., an author that dedicates his work to his audience; shares his “literary style” by illustrating his advices to his reader to take writing seriously and wants writer to apply his writing style to their work. For instance, he wants writers to find a subject he or she cares about, keep it simple, sounds like yourself and so on. In this essay, I want to share my personal guide to how to dress with style. There’s an old saying, “The clothes don’t wear you, you wear the clothes”. I often see someone on the street dressed so horrendously that I see only the clothes, and not the person wearing the clothes. For example, I saw someone wearing baggy business suits in the financial districts, like we’re in the 90’s. As a result, he definitely left a bad impression. Dressing stylishly is not easy; however, it is a great investment and gets the person going everyday asking the same question: what should I wear today? In order to dress stylishly, you ought to have the essentials mastered, such as tailored fit, color coordination and self-confidence. I feel like every individual should dress with style because the way they dress reflects their personality and dressing with style means that you are doing it your way. The key to dress stylishly is be yourself because your fashion sense, taste and style......

She works as a bereavement counselor and she lives with her two daughters, Rachel and Flora. Larry is described as a very unnoticeable woman, who does her best to avoid conflict and confrontation. Example from the text: “whispered the mother, who wanted life to be calm, a flat sea with no sudden breezes. She liked emotions to be explored in safe rooms, with a clock”. It means that she wants her family to appear happy, so all these emotions should be explored at home where nobody else can see it. Even though she’s having a hard time finding her personal life and her job and needs to rest and relax when she is off from work. Her job is to comfort people who have lost some close one, so when she comes home from that, she is all fed up with these problems and because of that, she does not deal with her daughter’s Rachel and Flora. The day when she had birthday all she wished for was a quiet day with no conflicts but instead of solving the problems she feels sorry for herself. She feels the tension of the daughter’s relationship, but still she does not know how to react and she’s actually avoiding the confrontation. The Dress

...The Dress Family conflicts in modern families are very typical today. People are getting divorced and children doesn't talk to their parents because of childish conflicts like we see in "The Dress." Rachel ends up leaving the house because of an insignificant dress. From my perspective it seems completely ridiculous to make such a big deal out of it. The two daughters, Flora and Rachel, are even ruining their mother's 40th birthday because of their own little conflict. That is very selfish by the them. They obviously had a nice evening planned at a magnificent restaurant. I'm sure the mother had been looking forward to it. Though, the daughters still manages to ruin the evening. I'm sure the mother must've been furious and even disappointed over her daughters. The mother seems like a nice woman. She believes in justice. In the end when she finds out that Rachel had stolen the dress from Flora she punishes her. She orders Rachel to go dig the dress back up from the ground and give it back to Flora. Even though the daughters are acting childish in the story, they both respect their mother. It was interesting to see how Rachel carelessly lied to Flora at the restaurant when she asked if she had taken the dress but when the mother asked Rachel at home if she had taken it Rachel simply just had to tell her the truth. That shows Rachel's respect towards her mother. Flora and Rachel doesn't respect each other as much at all. Even though both of them probably are grown up since......

The Dress

...“What is a disordered family? The short story, “The dress” of Julia Darling 2006, illustrates exactly that. It tells the story of the relationship between two sisters and their mother, and the consequences of their poor communication skills and repressed frustrations. In the following analysis and interpretation, I will unravel the tangled threads of the complicated affair, by giving a characterization of the mother and revealing the relationship between the sisters. In addition to this, I will touch on the symbolism, structure and the themes of the short story. The plot begins at home, when Rachel discovers that her sister has stolen her new silk dress. For the evening the family have planned to eat at a modern restaurant, and for the occasion Rachel, the older sister, has bought a beautiful perfect blue silk dress. Flora finds the dress, when she is home alone and finds it impossible to resist the urge to try it on. Suddenly she finds herself strolling down the street, feeling elite and confident all because of the dress; qualities she sees in her sister, but fails to see in herself. By accident she ruins the dress, and in desperation and fear she buries it outside the house in the garden. When they later meet up at the restaurant, Rachel is furious with her sister making an uncomfortable mood at the table. The mother, as the bereavement counselor and low self-confidence woman she is, tries to avoid the fight by babbling on about unimportant stuff like, what is on......
