Today is the first day of school. The three months of vacation in the country have passed like a dream. This morning, I was returning to school.

I was thinking of the country, and went unwillingly. The streets were swarming with pupils. The two bookshops were thronged with persons who were purchasing books, copy-books and school-outfit. In front of the school, so many people had collected, that the beadle and the policeman found it hard to keep the entrance clear. Near the door, I feft myself touched on the shoulder; it was my master of the eleventh grade, cheerful as usual, and he said to me:

- "So we are to part forever, Henry!"

I knew it well, yet the words pained me. We made our way in with difficulty. Pupils of all ages filled the anteroom and the stairs, making such a buzzing, that it seemed like entering a theatre. I was glad to see once more that large room on the ground floor, where I had passed nearly every day for three years. There was a throng of teachers going and coming. My school-mistress of the last year greeted me from the door of the class room, and said:

- "Henry, you are going to the floor above, this year. I shall not even see you pass by any more !". And she gazed regretfully at me.

At ten o'clock, we were all in our classes. The school seemed so small and gloomy to me when I thought of the woods and the mountains where I had passed the summer. I thought again, too, of my previous master who was so good, and who always smiled at us. Our present teacher is tall; he has no beard; his hair is gray and long. He has a big voice, and he looks at us fixedly, one after the other, as though he were reading our very thoughts, and he never smiles.

I said to myself: "This is my first day. There are nine months more. What work, what monthly examinations, what weariness and whatever will be…...

First Day

...The beeping of my alarm clock sounded like a countdown. The first day of high school was only two hours away. I was excited, but a lot more nervous. I got out of bed, got ready, and then was on my way to the bus stop. All I could think of were the stories I heard about high school being so horrible with all the strict teachers, the really hard tests, and of course being a freshman didn’t help either. The bus ride to the school was only ten minutes, but it seemed a lot longer. When we finally got there, I was more nervous than ever. The day ahead of me was about to get a lot more complicated though with all the work, finding a seat at lunch, and getting lost. I just knew the first day of high school was going to be a memorable one. I drug my feet slowly, walking forward as I started looking at all the other kids; most of them were in their groups and were talking, laughing and smiling amongst themselves. It was very loud, almost as if I were in a football stadium. I could see teachers confronting the other students for wearing hats, having their IPod headphones in, or just causing mischief. I felt very small, like an ant, waiting to be crushed by someone. I opened the double glass office doors to a place with more people than I ever thought could fit into that small of an area. Everyone was elbow to elbow; it was like being in a sardine can. It turns out I was not the only one who was having difficulties finding my way around. I heard a loud......

The First Day

...The first day The short story, “The first day” is about a young daughter and a mother. It is written by Edward P. Jones The daughter is about to start in elementary school, and there is a lot of feelings involved in this new chapter of her life. The girl is wearing a checkeredlike blue-and-green cotton dress, and her mother spent nearly an hour on her hair this morning, plaiting and replaiting, so that the girl’s head tingles, all this for making a good expression of her daughter, the first day of a whole new life with school. The new start of the daughter’s life starts out crooked anyhow, as they are turned down at the first school they go to. The mother wants her to go to Seaton Elementary School, as its location is close to an important place for the mother. Seaton is just across the street from her mother’s rock – the church. The reason the woman from Seaton Elementary School turns them down is because of the place they are living. She says that since they are living beyond the area that Seaton serves, her daughter cannot be attending Seaton. They will have to visit Walker-Jones Elementary School instead. The mother is not convinced yet though, for several more minutes she questions the woman why her daughter can’t attend Seaton. This point in the story gives great insight in her mother’s will, and how much she really wants to give her daughter an education. Even though the woman turns her down, she does not give up. As well as it shows that she has a......

Peter Green's First Day

...An Analysis of 'Peter Green’s First Day' The business ethics case “Peter Green’s First Day” presents the dilemma of recent college graduate Peter Green, who has just completed a training program for Scott Carpets and is out on his first sales call with his District Manager, John Murphy. Peter is taking over Murphy’s original sales territory (before Murphy was promoted), and he wants to make a good impression as the two of them call on an important client, Peabody Rug. To Peter’s delight, the owner of Peabody Rug agrees to a large sale but then makes a request for some “help on the freight costs.(运费成本)” Later, Peter asks his manager what such “help” means and is told that Peabody will claim that some of the carpet was damaged in transit to the store. Peter would then be expected to falsify a damaged freight report for Scott Carpets’ front office, and Peabody would be given a discount equal to the cost of shipping the rolls of carpet back to the warehouse for replacement. Peter is told that this is standard practice in doing business with Peabody Rug, both for Scott Carpets and its competitors. Peter does not understand: “Basically, what you’re asking me to do,” he tells his manager, “is to lie to the front office.” The manager is furious with this characterization. Upset and uncertain, Peter returns home to his wife and newborn. He was raised to tell the truth; now, on the first day of his new, job he believes he is being asked to lie. Robert Solomon, Professor of......

My First Day at School

...My First Day at School After a patience of six years to become the known phenomenon as a student, I suddenly felt nervousness scatter my entire body. I was lost in my own thoughts and there were nowhere to escape. The excitement and enthusiasm that had been grown since last year where my parents told me the very unknowing thing school disappeared. I didn’t want that the school should be replaced by the comfortable kindergarten with the safely settings where my friends were. I became afraid of the unconscious, afraid of the strange and I began crying. I wanted that my father immediately turned the car and drove back home, but it was too late. We were only few metres from the school. My parents told me that it would be great and that I would meet new people, and get new friends to know. I would no longer be a little boy, but instead a big boy that went to school with own schoolbag with books in it. I knew that all the things my parents told me were just for to get me more comfortable in the situation. Actually it helped especially the last thing they told me and therefore I saw a ray of hope even though the circumstances. Was it so terrible as I predicted? Maybe it was just me who was too exaggerated. I was dressed in my finest clothes and my hair was weird done with help by some sticky trash, fashionable my mother told me. N. Zahle’s School was the name of the school where I began and spent my next ten years. It was a school of good reputation where my sister......

First Day

...01/28/2014 ENG: 102 Professor Benjamini On my first day in this new semester I have realized that sometimes in life some events just happen to make us a better person in the future. I woke up and came to Norwalk Community College and seen something that I thought I would not encounter here. I noticed one of my Muslim friends that were attending this school with me being bullied for his religion and the attire that he had on. Honesty I wasn’t shocked by this only because I have experienced this before. I know that racism takes place all over the world but I just can’t stand it when it takes place in front of me. I stood up for my friend and explained to the bullies why what they were doing was wrong. At the end of the day it was just ignorance and confusion that I had to face but I honestly was really proud to help someone out in the time of need. I honestly don’t know why I’m writing about this but I just feel as if it’s something that I’m a part of. I believe that this school actually provides a strong foundation for a lot of students and things like bullying just ruins everything. In conclusion, I feel like this school is amazing and an event that really moved me is the first day when I actually stood up for something that I believe in. My friend has been thanking me ever since and I have even come to terms with the bullies and try to teach them more about my religion and my point of view on things. I’m actually glad that things worked out because it gave me more......

The Happiest Days of Your Life

...The Happiest Days of Your Life by Penelope Lively Still a boy, your whole life in front of you, and your parents have already figured out the rest of your childhood. Your parents are blind, blinded of the successful monetary people, and their dream of having the same amount of money and life. You are a boy without courage and an option to stand up for yourself, and instead become involved in a life embossed of hierarchy. The main characters in the novel are the boy Charles, Mr and Mrs Manders. The way Penelope describes the boy’s behaviour, and the way he shows his lack of interest, makes me feel that he is a very shy, insecure and a low self-confidence boy. A boy afraid of the unknown and new. In the story the boy is very quiet. We noticed it, when Charles was in the back seat of the car. He doesn’t eat his chocolate or read his comics (p. 61, l. 1-2 “The boy sat on the back of the seat of the car, a box of chocolates, unopened, beside him, and a comic, folded”). I think it’s a sign of Charles being insecure and afraid. He knows this new school isn’t something for him. He knows that he is low in the hierarchy. But he can’t say no, he won’t disappoint his parents, especially his mom. His mom is giving him no choice to choose his own way, to take responsibility for him self, and his own actions. Charles mom has since he was a little boy held him close to her self, which might have made him introvert. She hasn’t given him a chance to flourish like a real boy. It’s......

The Happiest Days of Your Life

...“The Happiest Days of Your Life” by Penelope Lively It is undoubtedly certain that a parent strives for the best for his child although all human beings put their own needs first, whether this is unknowingly or not, which sometimes leads to a very terrible mistake. Status, money and power can be very intriguing and Penelope Lively’s short story “The Happiest Days of Your Life”, 1978, is a great example on how one can outshine the other. The parents in the story clearly have the best intentions for their only child, Charles, but the lack of communication between them and their child will result in a bad choice. The short story “The Happiest Days of Your Life” is told by an omniscient author in 3rd person. The story’s point of departure is the protagonist Charles who is the child of the two other characters we meet, Charles’ parents; “He looks straight a head of him, at the road coiling beneath the bonnet of the car. His face is haggard with anticipation. 'Next term, we'll mash you...’” (p. 59, l. 5-7) is a great example of the omniscient author since the author tells us how the child feels and thinks. On the other hand the author does not know of Charles’ father’s thoughts or the other characters we meet throughout the story. We also get a bit of an expression of the mother’s thoughts and feelings, but not as much as we get to know Charles. We are introduced to two different environments in the story; the car and St. Edward’s Preparatory School. The environment in......

School Days

...School Days School Days When looking over my life as a child, I wanted to reflect on my childhood and teenage years. I grew up without both of my parents, therefore this was the most important part of my life. The reason these two experiences meant so much to me, because my sister made the decision to raise me. I can reflect back on these two situations that made me the woman I am today. I didn’t allow my life to stop me from receiving my education. My sister was my role model that I looked up too. Even though, my sister is no longer here I am still striving to achieve my education. I learned at an early age the importance of an education. My goal is to instill in my daughter the importance of an education. Microsystem My support came from my sister and this allowed me to go beyond the crying. I can remember in elementary school, I would cry all the time, because I didn’t like going. As a child growing up school was one of my less favorite places. I was a spoiled child by my father, therefore the only person I wanted to be with was him. I did not understand how important school was back then. It was so hard for me to adjust to other children at my school. I did not think about how staying home would affect my learning. Of course, my father tried to persuade me to go to school, but it still took time for me to realize how important getting my education. My father brought me hamburgers and all the food I love eating. One day when I got home from school, my...

First Day on the Job

...“First Day on the Job” November 20, 2010 HRM530 Strategic Human Resource Management Dr. Charles Woods Discuss the factors causing the employee’s dissatisfaction. The main factors causing the employee’s dissatisfaction are burnout and the lack of career development. The employee expressed to Malik that she is exhausted, losing interest in her job, and does not feel like she learning or experiencing the skills that will help her reach her goal of owning her own business. These feelings are directly related to burnout and the lack of career development at her job. Stewart and Brown (2009) define burnout as a “psychological phenomenon involving emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and a decline in feelings of competence about work” (p.386). Symptoms include feelings of being overworked, having a distant attitude toward work, and reduced expectations of success at work. Burnout is related to workload, pressure, stress, and interoffice discord. Stewart and Brown (2009) describe the career development process as a series of steps that helps employees determine and develop in career paths and goals. She does not feel she is being challenged in areas that would help her reach her long term goals of business ownership. It is apparent this employee has formulated a career goal, but without gaining experience in her current position, she feels her time there is being wasted. Identify which of these factors could be addressed with improvements in the way......

First Day of School

...Learning at your own pace is key to becoming a productive person in society. This is story about my first day in first grade. It was a blustery Monday morning. I was awakened by my mother giving me a kiss on my forehead. The air in the room smelled stale from sleep which emphasized the smell of coffee on her breathe-it was so fresh I could almost taste it. “Time to wake up for your first day of school.”, she said. My vision started to come into focus as I slowly began to open my eyes. Magically my clothes, which were flung all over the floor the night before, were perfectly folded on the dresser. The shades on my bedroom window were drawn to the very top, aiming the early morning sun straight into my direction, blinding me. I could hear the wind outside, cool and crisp, causing me to burrow further into my blankets-interrupting my own personal cocoon of warmth and safety. “You’re going to be late for your first day of school if you don’t get moving!”. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and planted my feet on the soft, vanilla colored carpet. Instantly, I felt the nervousness fluttering through my veins. Today is going to be my first day in First grade. I was in the bathroom combing my bed head, brushing my teeth, and drying off from my morning shower. While getting ready, the aroma coming from the kitchen was mouth watering. With that first whiff, I instantly knew what riches would be presented to me at the breakfast table. I knew that today was going to be an important......

Your First Day on Your First Job

...Your First Day on Your First Job ‘You got the job! You got the job!’ were the words that joyfully rang out from the fast stuttering mouth of my closest neighbor, Maggie. She brought the good news that her boss, Regina Dumas, had agreed to employ me as a secretary for the non-government organization ‘Agency For Rural Transformation’. I couldn’t contained myself and exclaimed ‘Yes, I did it! Finally I can work and earn my own money!’ All too soon the day came for me to head off for my first day of work. I woke at 4:30 a.m., too excited to sleep anymore but anxious to start the journey to my workplace. ‘Make sure to drink at least a cup of tea’ was the forceful sound of my mother’s voice. She was happy for me, and wanted to ensure that I had a good start before beginning the workday. By 7:00 a.m., I was fully dressed in my long sleeve blue pant suit, paired with a florescent blouse and accessorized with my black shoes and brown leather bag. I kissed my mom goodbye and waited outside the house on the verandah for the sound of the blaring horn from the hired bus to take us to the workplace, a full seventeen miles from home. For the most part, the journey from St. Andrew’s to the parish of St. George’s was a smooth and uneventful ride. I travelled through the main winding mountainous road which took me through the rain forest, with its luscious pine trees. With the windows open, the fresh morning breeze smoothly bathed my face, giving it a refreshing feeling. The scent of......
