Critical Thinking
There are many different ways to reach critical thinking and in my opinion it’s all about where your mind set is. If you are determined to reach that goal you will get there all in due time. Using critical thinking means being open to new ideas, being willing to ask questions, looking for answers and taking what your processing in your mind to the next level. There are only six steps to the critical thinking process, all of which play an important role. For the first step there is remembering, which is basically just your mind registering information so that later on when you need to use what you have learned it is easy for you to recall. Our second step is understanding, which is when you are able to take something and make it your own. Meaning you can also take what you’re learning and apply it to a personal situation in your life then fully grasp the concept. Next we have our third step, applying. This is taking what you are learning and using it in a situation or a difficult spot to get where you are aiming to go. Now going onto our fourth step Analyzing, which is taking what you have in front of you and breaking it down into separate puzzle pieces to see the individual parts of what makes it function as a whole. The for the fifth step we have evaluating. The process of evaluating is as simple as looking at something as a whole after breaking it down into parts, then gathering an idea of how affective I believe this concept is. Also giving an explanation for why I feel this way about it and how I got to that conclusion. Last but not least we have our sixth step creating. This is just taking our concept and what we have learned about it, then inventing something of your own using it in full. You can use this process of critical thinking in almost any situations. When you are faced with an issue that you would normally act upon without stopping to think first sometimes you will bring yourself unwanted results. Whereas if you were to stop and break thinks down and use the process of your mind you are more likely to come out ahead in the end. It’s all a matter of looking things through all the way and allowing your mind to process them. This gives you the benefit of being able to act appropriately and make the best decision or conclusion in any given situation.

Critical Thinking and Ethics

Preferred Ethical Lens
After completing the Ethical Lens Inventory, I learned I have a results preferred ethical lens. Meaning that I run off of my intuition better known as my gut feelings to figure out what is best for every person as an individual in any given situation. I try to make sure that no matter what the situation is everybody benefits in some way and nobody loses. I automatically assume that everybody runs on their own person morals as an individual. My blind spot or biggest downfall is that every now and then I am not as dependable as I would normally be when I feel it’s the time to please me. That or I am too dependable putting everybody else’s needs before my own and accepting less than what I really deserve to be getting. As the evaluation put it “Being satisfied with too little good”. I personally believe that whether we realize it or not every single decision that we make as a person is always initially influenced by our own ethics and morals. For example, if I were in a situation where I had to make a quick hard decision I know I would go with whichever route I felt was right and just for everybody even if the other choice would benefit myself more I would not choose to go that way because it would not be the right thing to do. From my past personal experience whether proven or not, I believe that we all use our own personal morals and ethics to make decisions everyday sub-consciously. Ethics are used every day not only in the professional world but also in the social world. We use our ethics to decipher between what is right and what is wrong. Our ethics is our guidelines on how we treat the people around us in our lives. For instance, how a doctor or psychologist has ethics, they go by their ethics every day because to them that is what is right. I believe our ethics and our morals are what make up who we are, that is what builds our character as human beings.

...Critical Thinking and Ethics, Relatable? Even though Ethics is the study of the foundational values of a community, critical thinking and ethics are relatable to each other because, both involve the process of evaluation. When practicing good ethics, one must know which behaviors are best for themselves and others, this involves thinking critically. In a statement by Michael Scriven and Richard Paul, “Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action” (Critical Thinking as Defined by the National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking, 1987). The steps within the critical thinking process are: Remembering - Can you recall the key terms facts or events? Understanding – Are you able to explain the idea in your own words? Applying – Can you use this idea to produce a desired result? Analyzing – Are you able to divide the idea into parts, groups or steps? Evaluating – Can you rate the truth, usefulness, or quality of this idea and give reasons for your rating? Creating – Can you invent something new based on this idea? (Becoming a Master Student Chpt. 1). When making ethical decisions in life, one must use the critical thinking process to evaluate which behaviors are acceptable for themselves as well as others. Ethics and Critical Thinking

...Ethics and Critical Thinking Kali Lane Gen/201 6/15/2015 Cynthia Waddill Ethics and Critical Thinking Every person in the world learns ethics and critical thinking at some point in their lives. Ethics are taught as a moral principle that direct an individual’s behavior. Critical thinking means to make choices with enlightenment and direction. Ethics play a major role in everyday critical thinking by using methods like the critical thinking process and the ethical lens inventory. This flood of appeals leaves us with hundreds of choices about what to buy, where to go, and who to be. It's easy to lose our heads in the crosscurrent of competing ideas—unless we develop skills in critical thinking. When we think critically, we can make choices with open eyes (Ellis, 2014, pg. 203). The critical thinking process is a method used with six individual steps. These steps go as follows: remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. The first step helps you remember the issue and summarize it. To understand the issue means to read and listen while suspending any judgement you have against the matter. The step to apply means to take the information you know, and ask yourself, can I get a result? From there you have to analyze the situation. Divide the situation into steps to make it easier. Evaluate the quality of this idea, but make sure to give valuable reasons for your rating. Lastly, create something new! We all have a personal learning style......

...Critical Thinking and Ethics John Smith University of Phoenix GEN201/ Foundations for University Success January 14th 2012 Critical Thinking and Ethics Critical thinking and ethical decision making both play a vital role in both your academic and your career success as well. The relationship between critical thinking and ethics is an important one because it is a determining factor in the decisions we make and the outcome of those decisions. The definition of critical thinking is “disciplined thinking that is clear, rational, open-minded and informed by evidence”(dictionary.com, 2015). Our decisions not only have effects for us as individuals but also others and it’s important for us to weigh those effects when making any decisions. In order for us to make an informed decision and become a good critical thinker we must consider the six levels of critical thinking. Steps one and two of the critical thinking process revolve around remembering and understanding. These two steps are crucial in any critical thinking or decision making process as you must first remember and completely understand what you are reading or what you are discussing with someone. It is important to take the time out to make sure you understand because a misunderstanding can lead to a completely different outcome than the desired one. The third and fourth steps are applying and analyzing. This is the step where you can identify cause and effect of your decisions and......

...situation. Ethics is then applied to your current knowledge (perception) of the situation so you can continue to critically think of the best option at that moment in time. Without a solid ethical framework, critical thinking can be compromised. Critical thinking is the process of making a rational and logical decision based on the current situation, environment, and variables that come into play. Critical thinking is much more than the average thought process. When you’re just ordinarily thinking your mind tends to wander and daydream. Critical thinking is more of a structured process in which you intake all of the possibilities. We critically think every day; one personal example of critical thinking is before I leave my house to run errands I always think of the most efficient route in which to drive. The route that will save me the most amount of time. Certain businesses have specific hours, so I also need to think of which places to visit first. We don’t think of critical thinking as a step by step process since it comes to us naturally, but it can be broken down into a six-step process. Critical thinking is the process of taking in and understanding new information, and you then use that information along with your ethical framework to analyze and evaluate the situation that will lead you to a conclusion. Critical thinking isn’t something new; we’ve been doing this since the dawn of civilization. Personal ethics affects decision making because your ethics......

Critical Thinking and Ethics Essay

...Critical Thinking and Ethics Critical thinking has a unique and complementary relationship with ethics. Critical thinking is what makes ethics come to life. In fact, it is imperative to “…develop critical-thinking skills, to recognize behavior and to understand different philosophical approaches to moral reasoning” (Manias, Monroe, & Till, 2013, Para.2). The principles and rules of critical thinking are applicable to ethical reasoning because they enable a mental process of evaluation that helps guide us to decisions based on truths and information that is verified. Ultimately, “Ethical principles mean something only when manifested in behavior. They have force only when embodied in action” (Paul & Elder, 2011, Para.5). It is only through true critical thinking analysis that our ethical reasoning will translate into exemplary forms of actions. If everyone followed the rules and guidelines of logic, there would still be a need for ethical decision making. The reason is because, “the forces that shape us and the institutions that nurture us are complex and sometimes contradictory” (Manias, Monroe, & Till, 2013, Para. 1). Much like ethics (morals, values, individual beliefs and sense of right and wrong), our logic is largely influenced by our background and experiences. Therefore it is too overwhelmed with emotion, making it unreliable for ethical decision making. If a woman finds out that the powerplant she works for is guilty......

...The Relationship between Critical Thinking and Ethics Donald J. Poirier Gen/201 February 2, 2016 Amy Gingrich The Relationship between Critical Thinking and Ethics When we begin to talk about the relationship between critical thinking and ethics, we must first have to understand the meaning of both. The Foundation for Critical Thinking defines critical thinking as the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. That is a lot for me to comprehend, so I will state it in easier terms; it is the mental process of actively and skillfully evaluating information to reach an intelligent answer or conclusion. Ethics, on the other hand, is an area of study that deals with ideas about what is good and bad behavior or a branch of philosophy dealing with what is morally right or wrong. So that we can more easily comprehend critical thinking, it is broken down into six steps. Step 1 is Remembering. Remembering is the basic level that requires that you be able to identify what is being said, such as the topic and main points. Step 2 is Understanding. Understanding means the comprehension of the material read, seen, or heard. The best way to know if you understand something is whether you can put in your own words what was read or heard. Critical Thinking and Ethics Chelsea Fitzgerald GEN/201 June 22, 2016 Jenifer Casey Critical Thinking and Ethics The human race has come a long way from the basic instincts of survival to the inventions such as cars and telephones to improve the quality of life. The skill of critical thinking was used in such devices as well as the innovations to improve the products. There are many definitions of critical thinking; some are just a brief statement, and some are described in over one hundred words. However, the primary definition of critical thinking is defined as disciplined thinking that is clear, rational, open-minded and informed by evidence. By taking the path of critical thinking, one goes through the process of evaluating themselves to determine their code of conduct. Ethics plays an important role when applying critical thinking to any given situation. Critical thinking is a complex process that can be broken down into six steps. The first and lowest step of the process is remembering. Memorization can be very useful, but it is empty if the material isn’t comprehended. The second phase of the process is understanding. This step is a little more important to the process because one has to have a general knowledge of the subject to summarize and express your ideas on the topic at hand. Ellis (1984) stated, “ Effective reading calls for listening and understanding while suspending judgment.” Applying......
