European Studies Writing Lab

Plagiarism, Referencing and APA Style European Studies and The Hague University of Applied Sciences have a strict policy towards plagiarism and insist that all students use APA Style referencing to prevent accidental plagiarism. APA Style is a set of rules for writing research reports and documenting sources in academic writing that was created by the American Psychological
Association to standardise practices in the social sciences. It is the standard for academic writing at The Hague University of Applied Sciences and includes a standard format for
Research Reports and for documenting information you use from sources.
Documenting Sources and Plagiarism
Plagiarism refers to using someone else’s ideas or words without giving them credit or passing someone else’s work off as your own. Most of the time, this happens by accident: a student borrows some information or text from a website and forgets to properly indicate what they’ve done. There are more extreme cases, in which students deliberately copy someone else’s work, in violation of the Code of Conduct at European Studies, which insists that “we are always honest with each other and with ourselves,”1 but thankfully, these cases are rare.
It is essential that, whenever you write something, you make sure that you clearly label anything you did not write yourself so that you never have to be accused of plagiarism. APA style gives you the tools to do this.
In-Text Referencing
Whenever you want to include ideas or text in an assignment that you did not think of yourself, you need to follow three simple steps:
1. Use a Signal Phrase
Writers must introduce borrowed words or ideas by using phrases like "According to" or "As
Smith said," in order to be clear about where the information came from.
2. Quote or Paraphrase
Once you have a signal phrase in place,…...

Co Education

...most students attend either single-sex schools or co-ed schools. Is there a difference? It is important to explore the advantages and disadvantages of both systems. The formative years of children are the best time to expose them to the company of the other gender, in order that they may learn each others’ behaviour and be better prepared for adult life. Co-ed school provides a superb environment and opportunity for both sexes to mix, for example, boys and girls get to learn together in key learning area from maths to food tech. As a result, male students (or vice versa), girls may become more confident and comfortable in dealing with the opposite sex without being shy or embarrassed. In fact boys and girls are a good influence on each other, engendering good behaviour and maturity – particularly as teenage girls usually exhibit greater responsibility than boys of the same age. Academic competition between the sexes is a spur to better performance at school. Co-ed school mimics or mirrors the 'real' world where both sexes mix, for example, whether you are working in a store or in an corporate office, you are in an assorted place of mixed sexes. If there is no segregation, then why have it at school?Co-ed schools promote the need to get along with each other which can avoid sexism and discrimination in the future. It teaches students that they are equal, have the same right and the opportunity to reach their potential. Also, co-ed schools allow great opportunities for boys......

Co-Existence

...Ashley Caffrey Chapter 1: “I have a dream….of Peace Co-Existence”. The reason that Chapter 1 is titled this, is because Nakita Khrushchev’s main points in his beliefs were that everyone could have a peaceful co-existence. His theory was that all the feuding countries (Russia, America, Great Britain, China and Italy), could co-exist together without war or fighting. Chapter2: “Camp David Getaway” The title was given to this chapter because it describes the failed attempts made my Krushchev to create a sort of bond between himself and President Eisenhower. He took a trip one year to the Camp David sight and spent a day with the President. Chapter 3: “Staring Contest Showdown” In May of 1962, Nakita Khrushchev met with Fidel Castro and came to an agreement to place nuclear missiles in Cuba. This was said to have been done to prevent any sort of future invasion attempt on the country. The US got wind of this via a U-2 aircraft and sent navy ships to “blockade” the Russians from delivering any more weapons to the Cubans. After a tense stand off in the waters of Cuba, the two countries came to an agreement. Russia agreed to dismantle all nuclear devices in Cuba as long as America vowed never to invade Cuba. Chapter 4: “Give Me Freedom or Give me Press” One of the big impacts that Khrushchev had on Russia was his belief in freedom of speech. He felt that artist and writers should have the freedom to express their thoughts and opinions. Chapter 5: “While The......

Co-Creation

... marketing has become the important tool in any business strategy. Today I am going to tell you one of the new marketing concepts that have been practised by various companies over the world: we call it value co-creation or consumer generated value. I believe most of the local or small business owners may not heard of this at all, I will try to make my explanation simple. Before I start, let me tell you a story of my own experience. During my birthday last year, I received a birthday cake from my friend that full with my favourite cartoon character Winnie, The Pooh miniatures. It is designed in a way that you would not be able to find it in any stores out there. Out of curiosity, I browsed through their facebook page and found out the owner has used a very interesting slogan: You dream it, we bake it. Unlike the traditional way of select and pay in most of the bakery shops, in this case where rather than rely on the creativity of bakery shop, my friend is able to share his idea, experience and expectation on how he wants the cake to be looked like. In other words, he has participated in a new product development and co-created value with the shop owner. The whole process is less about transaction and more about interaction. A simple way of understanding it is value co-creation is the ability of the company and consumer to create additional value for each other. It is not about what you can provide to your customer but is about what your customer wants or wishes. Consumers......

Co-Dependency

...Co-Dependents Anonymous Lessons On Living: Biblical Perspectives Co-Dependents anonymous or (CoDA) is an organization that was originally founded in 1986 by a man and women names Ken and Mary (Co-Dependents Anonymous, 1995). Ken and Mary were originally from Phoenix, Arizona and were part of an AA type fellowship for their codependent behaviors.  The sole purpose of this program is to follow a similar step as a typical AA meeting would. The program follows 12 steps in which a person admits his or her problems and eventually confronts their issues and turn their relationship into one that is healthy. It is designed to help individuals feel that they are co-dependent or possibly in an unhealthy relationship. Although this program is not setup to cure individuals, its objective is to give the individual a chance to accept that they have a problem, then face it, and find a way to rectify it. Until this can happen the person may remain unhappy and could not only be hurting themselves, but hurting those who matter most in their lives. After conducting my research on co-dependency, I chose to attend a twelve-step group meeting on co-dependency. The meeting was held at the city public library on a Wednesday evening by the organization, Co-Dependency Anonymous. I was expecting to walk into a room with chairs formed in a circle, but there were individual desks set up facing a white board. I took a seat towards the back of the room. The meeting was being held by a woman by the......

Co-Education

...Essay Introduction: Co-Education means the education of boys and girls together in the same institution and at the same time. In India, it has recently become common. In the recent past religious leaders and the people of conservative views did not favor the idea. They were even against the education of women, because they were not in favor of liberty and equality to be granted to women. But now times have changed. Co-education in India: Co-education is not a new thing for us. In the good old days when Sanskrit used to be the mother tongue in India and the Ashram were the seats of learning, co-education was widely practiced. In the Hindu scriptures, old records and legends, we find a number of examples which show that co-education was prevalent then. The practice continued till the advent of Muslim rule in India. With the Muslim rule came the degradation of women. The ‘Purdha’ system led to the discouragement of female education. Co-education in the West: In Europe Co-education is only of recent origin. Oxford and Cambridge universities kept their door tightly shut against woman till recently. But after the First World War, Co-education had tremendous rise in Europe and America. In America women have now begun to outnumber man in the school and colleges. Criticism in Favor and Against Co-education: For the very beginning powerful voices have been raised against this speedy march of co-education. Stephen Leacock, an eminent American educationist declares with emphasis,......
