Preparing For Your Case Interview

Where your ideas make a difference.

At A.T. Kearney we are looking for people who love to reach out. People who want to stretch their talents. People who will challenge themselves to achieve meaningful, measurable results for their clients, their firm, and themselves. People with ideas. Your interest in a consulting career with us suggests that you may be one of those people, and we have designed our interview process so that you will have every opportunity to show it. The A.T. Kearney interview sequence consists of two rounds, typically completed within a 3-week period. The first includes two 45-minute interviews conducted back-to-back on campus or in another convenient location. The second, which normally takes place at our nearest office, involves three 45-minute meetings with one or more of A.T. Kearney’s senior people. If you are invited to complete the full sequence, you can expect that both interviews in the first round and two in the second will be case-oriented. This means that in addition to discussing our firm and your future it, the A.T. Kearney consultants you meet will also present you with real-world business problems and ask you to develop solutions. Experience shows that the applicants who are the most successful in a case interview are those who enter it with the right frame of mind and the best preparation. The following information is designed to help you achieve both.

Why The Case Format? While we look for many qualities in an applicant, the most important is his or her ability to think and communicate as we believe a successful consultant should. A case interview offers you the opportunity to demonstrate your consulting potential. The case format is a simulation in which your interviewer, in the role of client, presents you with a complex business problem and seeks your initial recommendations for…...

...Consulting National Chains Dustin Riedemann Kaplan University IT402: IT Consulting Skills Prof:  Abdellah Tazi August 21, 2013 There are many different ways to look at whether or not the national chain should change their IT applications to help support the customer loyalty program. First the consultant needs to look at all the pros and cons of both changing the applications and the pros and cons of not changing the applications. First we can look at the pros of changing the IT applications to include a customer loyalty program. A good thing that may come out of changing the IT applications would be that the national chain would hope to keep the customers that the regional chain already has. This would help them to make more money and hopefully make the merger a success. This could also attract new customers that are looking to save money when shopping for their regular groceries. By promoting the customer loyalty program and telling potential customers that if they sign up for the program that they will be saving “x” amount on certain marked products, this will more than likely start to bring in more customers to the national chain because most people are always looking for a way to save money. This will also make the national chain more money because they will have more customers coming in and out of their doors, but they will still be making money off the products that they are selling, but they may not be making as much. A con to changing the IT applications to......

In the interview you will have maybe 2 minutes but you should be able to solve it in 1 minute to be able to solve it in interview setting in 2 minutes. Currently, our client . shrimps restaurant . has a person who shells shrimp manually. The worker needs 15 minutes to set up his work space for shelling shrimps each day. Shelling shrimps is not his main task in the restaurant. It takes him 10 min to shell one pound of shrimps. His wage is $6 per hour. It is possible to buy a machine for $3285 that automatically shells shrimps. Its useful life is 3 years. Setup time for the machine is 30 min each day. The same worker will serve this machine. The machine can process 60 pounds per hour. What is break-even volume of shrimps needed to be processed each day to justify the investment into the machine? Solution: Assume 365 working days. 3 years = 1095 days. Cost of machine per day = 3285/1095 = $3. So, we need to recover $3 per day. Now, (variable) cost of shelling per pound is $1. With the machine, this will be $0.1. So, we will save $0.9 variable cost per pound...

Business Consulting

...Business Consulting The word “consulting” can have many definitions for people. A friend advising a friend on a personal issue as well as a professional advising a company on their next move in order for the business to grow. Consulting is used in many scenarios within the work place. In the next couple of paragraphs we will be looking into consulting through the business aspects as well as what a business consultants consist of and their duties. When thinking of a business consultant what comes to mind is someone giving advice to a company, having an outsider look into the business and give their opinion and suggestions on what to change to improve the business starting with their employees to their clients, as well as advertising and product design. This can include training, skills developing, software upgrade, even the way they interview for job openings. According to Peter Block (1999), a consultant is a person that has influence on an individual, group, or company but has no authority to make changes only make suggestions even if the company does not take them. A good skill to have as a consultant is being capable of standing their ground when it comes to management as well as keeping their emotions under control. The reason for this is that in order for a company to have full trust on a consultant one has to show that they believe and standing up for what is best for the business and even thought the company might not go with the consultants plan...

...Week 2 Assignment-Consulting Jennifer Avalos MAN 324 March 7, 2015 Dr. John Elmer Week 2 Assignment- Consulting “A consultant is who claims expertise in a particular arena, and advises on increased efficiency, decision making, and other aspects of management (Consultant, 2012).” Throughout my career path consulting has played an important role in my everyday work experience. Being in the healthcare field we face dramatic changes when it comes to customer conduct, market dynamic forces, and regulatory demands. As a Junior Executive for Scripps Hospitals one of my focuses is to ensure value care for patients and also reduce cost and increase revenues. Also, play the role of consultant with situations that the day might bring towards our hospital. One consulting incident that I recall from not too long ago was to develop a faster process of opening and renewing contracts with insurance companies and accelerate the process of payment for services. “Most typically, the provider and payor begin negotiating contract renewals nine months before the contract is up. Most contracts are one to three years in duration, so these negotiations happen quite frequently (Weiss, 2012).” It was currently taking very long for us to serve our contract payors and that made our customer service skills below average. Insurance companies doubted on whether to renew contracts with us due to this issue. To make matters worse, it also delayed payments which affected our finances. I was......

...community, the terms “relationship marketing” and CRM are often used interchangeably (Parvatiyar and Sheth 2001). However, CRM is more commonly used in the context of technology solutions and has been described as “information-enabled relationship marketing” (Ryals and Payne 2001, p. 3). Zablah, Beuenger, and Johnston (2003, p. 116) suggest that CRM is “a philosophically-related offspring to relationship marketing which is for the most part neglected in the literature,” and they conclude that “further exploration of CRM and its related phenomena is not only warranted but also desperately needed.” A significant problem that many organizations deciding to adopt CRM face stems from the great deal of confusion about what constitutes CRM. In interviews with executives, which formed part of our research process (we describe this process subsequently), we found a wide range of views about what CRM means. To some, it meant direct mail, a loyalty card scheme, or a database, whereas others envisioned it as a help desk or a call center. Some said that it was about populating a data warehouse or undertaking data mining; others considered CRM an e-commerce solution, such as the use of a personalization engine on the Internet Journal of Marketing Vol. 69 (October 2005), 167–176 We organize this article in three main parts. First, we explore the role of CRM and identify three alternative perspectives of CRM. Second, we consider the need for a cross-functional process-based approach to......

...Consulting One of the first jobs I had was as an aide in a nursing home. The main issue I experienced there was lack of supplies for patient care and the high turnover of employees. At the beginning of each shift, there was a scramble to load the cart with clean linen and towels. It was basically a first come, first serve situation. There was never enough aides to properly take care of the patients. With each aide responsible for ten or more patients, many times patients would be confined to their beds waiting to be fed, changed, or bathed. This was not acceptable. The management was focused on profits, not care. They did not listen to the concerns of the employees that were directly involved with patient care, yet set high expectations for employee productivity. Reengineering, defined as “the fundament rethinking and radical design of business process to achieve dramatic improvements in critical, contemporary measures of performance such as cost, quality, service, and speed” (Chase, 2006). Before making any recommendation on reengineering the business, I would first evaluate the business and determine how the business operates. Looking at all aspects of the business will allow me to see the decision making process management utilizes (Business Consulting Through Development and Optimization, 2011), how they deal with problems, treat their employees and the income gained or loss by not having the proper aide to patient ratios. My InnerView, Inc., is a company that......

Dugger Consulting An operation consulting is the process that assists various categories in business to evaluate the present status of internal methods and strategies, and improve the comprehensive operation of the company (What is Operations Consulting?). A problem that I have experienced with the consulting process at a current or past employer will be explained. The longest on and off job that I have held while in school has to be working as a sales associate at Macy’s. Working in the retail field definitely allows a person to know so much more about how a business is ran and what all goes into all the sales and profits. With this particular employer there were a few problems in the process that I have seen not personally dealt with. As an associates we were really never told how we were doing in personal sales and how we were performing in our job; the guideline for Macy’s was that managers are supposed to speak with each associate and tell them how they are doing and what improvements need to be made and what they were doing great at each quarter, but we barely were shown any information of that. I worked there a consecutive year and was not shown once at all. What would I want my client to be aware of that would help significantly in re-engineering the process? Re-engineering is defined as the systematic starting completely fresh and recreating the......
