Correctional Trends Evaluation
Contemporary Issues and Futures in Criminal Justice CJA/394

The paper will evaluate the past, present, and future trends that have had a profound affect in the development and operation of institutional and community-based corrections. The need of prisons and prison administrators is most important in the criminal justice system therefore, the paper will identify the current and future issues today. In addition the paper will evaluate the corrections system as a developing trend pertaining to the issues and the role of alternative corrections.
Development and Operations of Institutional Corrections In prior years the development of institutional corrections left nothing to the imagination. The perspective of development and operations of institutional corrections is one fact that the facilities’ inmates were housed in the conditions were dark and fifthly. Inmates were treated harshly, and worked extremely hard. Today the development and operations of institutional corrections play a part where constitutional rights are in affect. Inmates today although the prison systems are overcrowded they are with constitutional rights. One constitutional right an inmate is entitled to today is health care. The prison system today functions differently. Rules and regulations are enforced but not by the hands of the facility but by the law. Facilities today although overcrowded are no longer dark, and fifthly. Inmates have three meals a day, shower access, time in the yard, they have a complete library for inmates to use, and inmates have access to cell phones, computers, and televisions. Some Americans may say they have the luxuries of the outside world but with the doors locks. Future developments and operations of institutional corrections should not be without health care. The importance of…...

Week 4 Assignment 1

...Week 4 Assignment 1 Soc 100 July 29, 2012 In this paper I will be discussing the article “Study of delinquent, diverted, and high-risk adolescent girls: Implications for mental health intervention”. I will start by giving a brief summary of the article I have chosen. Followed by discussing the type of article this is and my conclusion I have drawn form the information found in this article. Lastly I will discuss how this article fits into our sociology class as well as how this article differs from non-scholarly periodicals The article begins by describing the issue of increasing numbers of adolescent girls being entered into our nation’s juvenile judicial system. The study aims to assess the most common risk factors that are affecting adolescent girls being entered into the juvenile judicial system. It also aims to find the effectiveness of the prevention factors in place to keep adolescents out of the system. For the study a survey was administered over the course of nine months to a hundred and fifty-nine adolescent girls. These adolescent girls were broken into three categories delinquent, diverted and high-risk. Delinquent girls are the girls that have been entered in the juvenile justice system in some form ranging from home care to a penitentiary. The diverted girls group consists of girls that have engaged in behaviors that have brought them to the attention of the juvenile justice system but instead of being entered into the judicial system were referred to......

...Week 4 Assignment #1 Me’Shaw A. Taylor Dr. Anne Keyes REL 212 4/29/12 Discuss the criteria you will employ to determine if people on earth are religious — in other words, what does religion look like? Religion is a collection of cultural systems, belief systems, and worldviews that relate humanity to spirituality and sometimes, to moral values (Talal, 1982). Religions most notably are represented by symbols, stories, traditions or anything that tends to explain the meaning of life or the creation of earth and its beings. Each religion has its take on morality, ethics, religious laws, and lifestyle. Many religions have determined behaviors which include meetings or worship services. During these services they are worshipping their deity or praying to him or her. In observing religion, you may also see other services that members may be involved in which include sacrifices, revivals, feasts or dinners, initiations, funerals, marriage ceremonies, meditations, music, dances, and art. Describe three (3) examples of behaviors or beliefs you observe that meet the criteria you established above. 1. Baptism is a Christian rite or ceremony that Christians participate in. It is a form of rebirth and it done by water and the Holy Spirit. 2. Ramadan is another belief for Muslims which is a month of fasting in which they refrain from eating or drinking during the daytime. It is practiced to teach members about patience and submissiveness to their god. 3.......

...Criminal Justice Trends Evaluation Sean R. Callesto CJA 394 December 20, 2012 Jeromy Orton Criminal Justice Trends The past trends of the criminal justice system are how we evaluate the system as a whole, and how we strive to make it better. The present is full of ideas towards a better future involving those better ideas made in the past. With today’s society of highly educated individuals, we can only speculate on what the future of the criminal justice system will be, but we can be assured of one certainty, it will change. The value of the criminal justice system in a changing society will also play a factor in what will become of the criminal justice system itself. The Past The criminal justice system was first established in order to provide society a sense of balance. If everyone was left unchecked for the crimes that they had committed then there would not be a balance and there would only be chaos. Even when it seemed like there was a lot of incidents that went without notice, compared to today, hundreds of years ago, there were still laws that were established that prevented total anarchy. First, there were the police of the past. One does not have to look too far into the past to see how different the police were. Only a few hundred years to even seventy years before now will show what a different sort of job it was. When I think of the “Old School” police officer I think of the New York “beat cop” in the early to mid-1900’s that had......

All expectations should be acknowledged and understood and all responsibilities should be assigned. Smith & Imbrie quote (Lewis, 1996) by stating “although meetings are a principle way of keeping up-to-date, they are also one of the banes of project managers and many others”. ...and rehabilitate criminals. State prisons have a minimum and maximum security prisons which are divided based on the severity of the crime. Municipal prison is a high security prison. Military prison is operated by the military and is used to house prisoners of war, enemy combatants, those whose freedom is deemed a national security risk by the military or national authority and member of the military found guilty of a serious crime. (Department of Corrections WA State", 2012) Differences between jail and prisons: Although many people consider jail and prison the same thing but there are many differences the public should be aware of. For example, Ellisville county jail typically only holds people anywhere from a few hours to a week. This jail usually holds a person who is awaiting trial or your typical DUI case or drunk who needs a little time to sober up. On top of having a “drunk tank”, St. Louis county jail holds convicts who received up to a one year sentence, while the Boonville Correctional Facility has inmates sentenced anywhere from a couple of years to life. Jails generally do not offer any type of work or treatment programs like prisons have. Prisons have far more staff and security than jails; the Ellisville county jail generally has 12 to 15 officers on duty, while a prison may have 50 to 100 staff members working at any time. (Pearson Prentice Hall, 2009) Aspects about jail and prison culture and subculture: Prison culture is far rougher......

Cja 204 Week 4 Paper

...Juvenile Delinquency and Juvenile Crime Jason Bailey CJA/204 9/5/2014 Freddy Stansbury Juvenile Processing The process in which a juvenile enters the justice system is relatively simple. It starts with an arrest by a law enforcement official. Other ways it can start is by a referral from a parent of a minor. Even schools, victims of the juvenile, and probation officers can make referrals as well. There are several factors to consider when a case officer makes a decision as to whether or not to detain and charge them, release them, or in some cases place them in a youth welfare program. The officer must make a determination based upon facts of the case and also the recommendations of parents or legal guardians. About fifty percent of all juvenile cases are heard informally and usually dismissed unless the circumstances are rather extreme. When a juvenile is arrested and detained, they cannot be allowed to remain in an adult facility for longer than six hours. They must then be moved to a juvenile secure detention facility or released to their legal guardian. At this point the juvenile will be seen through an informal hearing. In which the judge can either dismiss the case or make some stipulations for the juvenile to complete before the case is dismissed. Some of those things include restitution, mandatory curfew, school attendance, and drug rehabilitation if the juvenile is caught using drugs. If the case goes beyond an informal hearing, then a formal hearing will be...

What is the probability that neither X nor Y will happen? The probability of X or Y occurring is: P(X) + P(Y) = .05 + .02 = .07 The probability of neither X or Y occurring is: 1 - .07 = .93 18. Let P(X) _ .55 and P(Y) _ .35. Assume the probability that they both occur is .20. What is the probability of either X or Y occurring?
