Michael’s face was red. “OK, then, gun to your head,” he demanded, “what’s the best Christmas movie?” Though his tone suggested he might actually have put something to my head, he hadn’t. Well, first, I told him, with a gun to my head I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on movies; second, the category’s too broad: Christmas comedy? Christmas love story? Is Die Hard a Christmas movie for taking place on Christmas? “Completely irrelevant,” he said. “Best is best. But anyway, it’s a trick question. They all suck because they all lie.” I knew better than to take the bait but I told him anyway that all movies lie. “Well, I know actors wear makeup and play make-believe,” he told me, “but they do that to tell a truth; Christmas movies lie to lie.” He put his mug down hard as if he wanted to tenderize the coaster. Glasses clinked down the bar. He’d been pounding me the same way since we sat down, which was common, but his red face was not. He cared about this. I watched his eyes and waited. A string of lights twinkled behind his head. “You think Santa Claus is universal,” he told me,“and that finding out he’s your parents is a primal disillusionment. That’s Hollywood bullshit. Kids have dads who bring out guns on Christmas Eve and put them to their children’s heads one by one,” he said. That can’t be right, I told him. “One by one and pulled the trigger,” he told me, “year in and year out, and made them wonder if one year there’d be bullets. Why have I never seen that in a movie?” I waited until he was finished. Why are you telling me this, Michael? I asked him. What the hell are you telling…...

Christmas

...Jingle Bells and a Cake Lights! Snow! Santa! It was that time of year again, my favorite holiday, Christmas. My mom, two of my brothers and I all decorated the house, inside and out. Our house was so nice and filled with Christmas colors. Our tree, garage, front door, and driveway were all covered with bright LED lights. I decorated a green reef with ornaments and bows to put up on the door. It was my mom’s idea to put a red bow on the mailbox. We had three plastic reindeer outside, two standing up and one down looking like it was eating grass. After all since it does snow a lot in Richmond we had a white Christmas. The snow is was so fluffy and soft that it felt like soft marshallows that will melt in your hand. The snow was perfect for the snowman we made to put up. He was a traditional snowman with the black pebbles for eyes, a carrot for a nose, and long branches for arms. To change him up from the rest of the snowmen my brother put one of his own black cardigans around the snowman. On the inside of the house we had a big 10 foot tree. It had lights spiraled around it, globe ornaments that were different colors (but they all matched, nothing tacky), little angles dangling and a nice white star at the top. Those decorations took a lot of work, but it was worth it. My family came to my exquisite city of Richmond, Virginia. All my cousins, my grandparents, my uncles and aunts even family friends came over to my house. It was a celebration. Not just a celebration of......

Christmas Carol

...That blessed Christmas morn: Over the hills and everywhere; Go, Tell It On The Mountain That Jesus Christ is born. When I was a seeker, I sought both night and day; I asked the Lord to help me, And He showed me the way: Go, Tell It On The Mountain, Over the hills and everywhere; Go, Tell It On The Mountain That Jesus Christ is born. He made me a watchman Upon the city wall, And if I am a Christian, I am the least of all. Go, Tell It On The Mountain, Over the hills and everywhere; Go, Tell It On The Mountain That Jesus Christ is born. Once in royal Davids city Once in royal Davids city, Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her Baby, In a manger for His bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ, her little Child. He came down to earth from heaven, Who is God and Lord of all, And His shelter was a stable, And His cradle was a stall: With the poor, and mean, and lowly, Lived on earth our Saviour holy. For He is our childhood's pattern; Day by day, like us, He grew; He was little, weak, and helpless, Tears and smiles, like us He knew; And He cares when we are sad, And he shares when we are glad. And our eyes at last shall see Him, Through His own redeeming love; For that Child so dear and gentle, Is our Lord in heaven above: And He leads His children on, To the place where He is gone. We wish you a Merry Christmas; We wish you a Merry Christmas; We wish you a Merry Christmas and a......

Christmas

...Christmas is a holiday celebrated by Romans. The first time the birth of Jesus Christ was ascribed to December 25 in the 4th century, according to the early Roman history. Early celebrations of Christmas are considered to have resulting from Roman and other European festivals that marked the ending of the harvest, and the beginning of winter solstice. Some traditions from those celebrations that have survived include decorating homes with greenery, giving presents, singing songs, and eating winter foods. There is a legend about St. Nicholas. Although a lot of his history is unconfirmed, he lived in the 4th century and is believed that he was a bishop. Many miracles ascribed to him are doubtful. Yet he was considered a patron saint in some countries. Children, sailors, and the poor also considered him a saint because he helped them. So to honor him, the Feast of Saint Nicholas was celebrated on December 6th and presents are given the night before. This tradition was well recognized by many countries by the 12th century. Eventually, Christmas Day and St. Nicholas’ Day were combined because they were so close together. St. Nicholas took on different characters in different countries. For example, The Netherlands have Sinter Klaas, Father Christmas gives gifts in Great Britain, Père Noël gives gifts in France, and in Germany St. Nicholas has had many names including Klaasbuur, Burklaas, Rauklas, Bullerklaas, and Sunnercla, although the name Father Christmas is becoming......

Coke and Christmas

...Coke and Christmas Ask a child about Christmas and the response you will get will most likely have to do with the man that supposedly travels from the North Pole in a sleigh pulled by reindeer, that goes down there chimney, and brings them presents, Santa Clause. But how did the image of this jolly old man come about? The truth is from the advertisements of Coca-Cola. And as the years went on, Coke’s Christmas advertisements continued. An advertisers goal is to attract consumers to their products. One way they do this is using specific calendar events to tie the product in with, including special events and holidays. For example, the candy producers Nestlé, Mars, and Hershey have made great profits around the time of certain holiday’s, such as selling candy hearts around Valentine’s Day and chocolate eggs around Easter. “The kings of candyland – Nestlé, Mars, and Hershey – have been able to ‘own’ these holidays during which they sell special candy at full retail price. In fact, seasonal sugar accounts for most of these companies’ profit, with Easter far in the lead with sales of more than half a billion dollars” (Twitchell 104). But the greatest “advertising time-bomb” (Twitchell 104) is when Coca-Cola decided to use Santa Clause, around Christmas time, in their advertisements. In the 1800’s, Clement Clarke Moore and Thomas Nast created the first images of Santa Clause. Moore wrote a poem called, “The Visit From Saint Nicholas,” for his daughters that ended up......

Christmas Is Christmas

Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, music, an exchange of Christmas cards, church celebrations, a special meal, and the display of various decorations; including Christmas trees, lights, garlands, mistletoe, nativity scenes, and holly. In addition, in Western Christianity several figures, known as Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, and Santa Claus, among other...

The Christmas

...The Christmas The leadership of the church that the author (Bill McKibben) of this story "The Christmas" urges practitioners to do what they call "Hundred Dollar Holidays". He explains this as "The church leadership voted to urge practitioners not to spend more than $100 per family on presents, and to rely on simple homemade gifts and on presents of services". This was suggested to anchor against the seductions of advertisers during the holiday season, and to save the families some money that could be used on other things like bills and things needed for the home. Bill then states that "When we began the $100 campaign, merchants who wrote letters to the local papers, made it clear to us what a threatening idea it was." With an idea like this and with how much revenue the holidays bring in for businesses this could really hurt them. He says that "So far, our daughter, Sophie, does fine at Christmas. Her stocking is exciting to her; the tree is exciting; skating on the pond is exciting. It's worth mentioning, however, that we don't have a television, so she may not understand the degree of her impoverishment." He states earlier that it is not about the money anymore it is about bringing more joy to the holiday. I on one hand can see his point on this, the holidays are about joy and spending time with one another and not about how much stuff you get. now on the other growing up we got two toys for Christmas and then all the other stuff was neat but it was stuff that we......
