...1. What might be the objective of a museum? Of a firm? Do they have the same objective? Why or why not? According to the text the function of a firm is “to purchase resources or inputs of labor services, capital, and raw materials in order to transform them into goods and services for sale” (Salvatore, 11). Ultimately, this is done to create a profit. The theory of the firm states that the objective of a firm is “to maximize the wealth or value of the firm” (Salvatore 12). A museum, on the other hand, is created to showcase historical pieces such as art of artifacts. None of it is done for the purpose of sale. However different the two organizations are, both seek to maximize the value of their respective agencies. A firm may do it to increase value for shareholders or to maximize profits. A museum may judge its value differently, perhaps in the pieces it acquires and their value as historical pieces rather than present day monetary value to sell. 5. According to Milton Friedman, “Business has only one social responsibility – to make profits (as long as it stays within the legal and moral rules of the game established by society). Few trends could so thoroughly undermine the very foundations of our society as the acceptance by corporate officials of a social responsibility other than to make as much money for their stockholders as possible.” Explain why you agree or disagree with such a statement. Milton Friedman’s idea that the only social responsibility of a business’...

...Discussion Board 1 Chapter 1: Why is shared information so important in a learning organization in comparison to an efficient performance organization? Discuss how an organization’s approach to sharing information may be related to other elements of organization design such as: structure, tasks, strategy, and culture.       “Learning Organization” is a name used for the process of using a strategy in a company to build training to improve and create a more effective company. Using this approach will require the company’s commitment and use of the Total Strategic Approach. Using the Total Strategic Approach, the following areas will be covered: performance assessment and appraisal, problem solving and acknowledgement, openness, honesty and trust, access to high quality, readily available information, inter-group activities and cross-fertilization of ideas, with organization assessment and evaluation of the development process” (Pettinger, 2002). The approach needs to be understood and created by the top management to be beneficial and effective.       “Performance Organization” is the focus on the performance and outcome of the company in three areas: financial performance, product performance and shareholders return. Rather than focus on the learning elements the company is based on the performance. (Citoni, Mahy, & Rycx, 2012)       In the “Learning Organization” structure, sharing information and communication is vitally important and learning is the......

Busi 561 Discussion Board 1

...Discussion Board 1/Week 1 Business Ethics To imply the ethical and spiritual perspective and keenly advise Benji Watson on accepting or refusing the contract offered by New Gen Health Sciences, it is imperative to define the parameters of Christian spirituality and ethics. As Christian, we are guided by many Commandments and teachings and examples set by many prophets, noble men, and many parables from Jesus, where upholding higher moral and ethical standard for the good of others, not self, was dear to him. In Luke 10: 29-37, Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan, a traveler from Jerusalem attacked and mocked by bandits. Two individuals, presented with the similar fate, were the least expected person to turn away and ignored the wounded person, by walking away and leaving the man stranded. Another important aspect to draw from the Christian spirituality mindset to advise Benji Watson, comes from Matthew 7: 12, commonly known as the Golden Rule. In this text, it is written that you do unto others as you would expect them to do unto you. Using the ethical perspective to advise Benji Watson, understanding of ethics, particularly business ethics, must be brought to bear. Ethics, in simplification is the study of good and bad behavior; whereas business ethics, a detachment of ethics, is what makes up good and bad behavior as related to business activities and values. From the definition of business ethics, we are left to decide what constitute the ambiguous terms...

Project Based Learning

...PBL Reflections Project-Based Learning is an amazing, innovative way to enhance a child’s learning potential through developmentally appropriate activities, lessons and projects. It is a well known fact that people have a greater tendency to learn more by doing, not just seeing or hearing. Children that are given the opportunity to engage in a hands-on lesson will have a greater understanding of the material. Students who understand the meaning of what they are learning retain more of the information and apply the knowledge more skillfully (1). Project-based learning allows children the chance to “learn by doing”. Project-based learning can be tailored to fit the educational needs of any elementary/middle/high school grade level. This type of social constructivism allows for the students to follow the teacher’s guided input while constructing their own ideas through hands-on activities and social interaction with peers. According to Vygotsky, the teacher considers all the traditional questions of instruction (how to organize and conduct learning activities, motivate students, assess learning), but the focus is on the students’ construction of knowledge using social interaction (2). The children can gather ideas, discuss their thoughts and develop new ideas and put their plan into action. They work together to form one cohesive and collaborative product. When I think back to my elementary/middle/high school days, most of my memories are of sitting in a desk trying to......

...BUSI 510B Managerial Economics Week 7 – Assignment: Final Project December 5, 2010 John Doe Columbia College of Missouri BUSI 510B Managerial Economics Week 7 – Assignment: Final Project Executive Summary In today’s economy that was and still is hurt by the housing market, it is very difficult for Fidelity National Financial (FNF) to remain profitable. FNF is a publicly traded company that focuses on title insurance which is directly tied to real estate sales and refinancing. Since the housing market downturn in 2006, this firm’s total revenue declined by 67% while total costs remained constant with overhead and operating costs. Sales and marketing are not a factor in revenue generation as the firm deposits more cash into a given bank and negotiates earnings credit rates. FNF asks that the bank to refer their mortgage customers to use this firm’s title and escrow services at closings. Thus, the more money the firm deposits at the bank, the more referrals will be generated which increases revenue. Since late 2006 to present day, the number of new mortgages has severely declined thus lowering the FNF’s value. However, it’s not over for FNF quite yet. The firm was able to lower costs by closing local offices and reducing staff in certain depressed markets like Michigan, California, Pennsylvania, and so forth. In addition, they able to reduce operating costs using technology breakthroughs such as increased networking solutions and more effective collaboration......

...The textbook defines diversity as “the human characteristics that make people different from one another” (Gomez, 2010). It may also be defined as “valuing all the ways we are similar and different” (Reese 2009, p. 53). 1. First, should he or others attempt to respond to negative reactions to the composition of the new EC? What should they say? To whom? When? How? It would be wise for Voser to get in front of the negativity voiced by some members of the organization before it festers into discontent and organizational tension. “Voser did not think it appropriate to measure his commitment to diversity and inclusion by looking only at the group of eight people at the very top of Shell” (Sucher 2020, p.1). It is important that Voser points out that the creation of the new Executive Committee (EC) does not represent the efforts of the organization to be both diverse and inclusive. He should reaffirm throughout the ranks that the mission will continue to be diversity and an atmosphere that encourages inclusion. It is pretty obvious from reading the case that the committee does not adequately reflect the culture that has been devised within the Royal Dutch Shell Company. I feel that it is important that this issue of negativity be dealt with and not overlooked. If left unattended it could lead to distrust, skepticism, and low morale amongst the employees. It should be handled properly and promptly before the situation becomes critical. As a new CEO, Voser needs to quickly......
