Investigating the Presentation of Speech

...Investigating the presentation of speech, writing and thought in spoken British English: A corpus-based approach1 Dan McIntyre a, Carol Bellard-Thomson b, John Heywood c, Tony McEnery c, Elena Semino c and Mick Short c a Liverpool Hope University College, UK, b University of Kent at Canterbury, UK, c Lancaster University, UK Abstract In this paper we describe the Lancaster Speech, Writing and Thought Presentation (SW&TP2) Spoken Corpus. We have constructed this corpus to investigate the ways in which speakers present speech, thought and writing in contemporary spoken British English, with the associated aim of comparing our findings with the patterns revealed by the previous Lancaster corpus-based investigation of SW&TP in written texts. We describe the structure of the corpus and the archives from which its composite texts are taken. These are the spoken section of the British National Corpus, and archives currently housed in the Centre for North West Regional Studies (CNWRS) at Lancaster University. We discuss the decisions that we made concerning the selection of suitable extracts from the archives, the re-transcription that was necessary in order to use the original CNWRS archive texts in our corpus, and the problems associated with the original archived transcripts. Having described the sources of our corpus, we move on to consider issues surrounding the mark-up of our data with TEI-conformant SGML, and the problems associated with capturing in electronic form the......

Sw Airlines

...Southwest Airlines The success of any organization, regardless of the size, depends on strong communication between its employees and senior management to the entire organization. Moreover, a successful organization depends on functional groups which are powered by strong individuals that hold a leadership position. Leaders have a tremendous effect on an organization and can influence the organization and its employees in a variety of ways both positively and negatively. In terms of communication, leaders influence how an organization’s managers and employees communicate with each other. Effective communication occurs when the intended receiver understands this idea, information, or belief in the way the sender intends. However, when the receiver fails to interpret the meaning of the idea, information, or the feeling the sender is attempted to transmit, the result is poor communication. When this occurs, negative reactions, confusion, or even anger can occur that can result in a good idea or plan to fail (Nayab, N. (2010). How does Leadership Affect Group Communication. Retrieved from http://www.brighthubpm.com/resource-management/92791-how-does-leadership-affect-group-communication/). Southwest Airlines was established and is currently operated by individuals who pride themselves as strong leaders, who insisted on creativity within the company, and created an organization that allowed its employees to communicate with each other and with senior management. Sw Airlnes Case Study

...Running head: SW Airlines Case Study Case Study Southwest Airlines Cardinal Stritch University Advanced Marketing Management CMB 508 September 3, 2013 Scott A. Braucht, MBA Professor In the 1940s travel via airplane was a privilege. Men wore a suit and tie and women wore dresses with a hat and gloves. Parents would endure a 27 hour flight from the middle of the country to Hawaii to see their soldier son at Pearle Harbor. Air travel was a luxury. Customers expected the best in treatment. Chef prepared meals were served on white china with glassware and silverware. A lot has changed since that time. There are a number of discount airlines today. They come and go, but Southwest Airlines has managed to stay in the business since 1971. Their success is due in part to the successful identification of their market and the needs of their customers. Southwest Airlines primary marketing strategy included bright red heart logos and catchy phrases for its peanuts (meals) and their drinks. As it grew, Southwest Airlines became known as the airline with cheap fares, on-time service and, most recently, not charging for luggage when other airlines started to do so. Passengers flying on Southwest Airlines are entertained by the pilots and flight attendants who tell jokes, describe funny facts of the areas as they fly over, and even burst into song. The flights are shorter than other airlines and the planes are turned around on the ground faster than the industry......

...Critical Review of Family Violence Theories Jane A. Rodriguez # 660084749 SWK 450 Inside Family Violence Professor Dale Shank L.M.S.W October 1, 2012 Abstract The theories that I have chosen for my paper are: race, class, and gender theory, and social learning theory. The race, class and gender theory is based on statistics on race such as the example that the book gives about African American men dying prematurely than their white counter parts (Hattery and Smith 2007). The fact is that there are more blue collar workers who are African American, and involved in physical labor. There is also more poverty, and lack of health care which can lead to more stress with the African American population. My paper will discuss the pros and cons of this theory. The second theory the Social Learning theory is a perspective that states that people learn within a social context. It is facilitated through concepts such as modeling and observational learning. Critical Review of Family Violence Theories In her now classic Black Feminist Thought (2000), Patricia Hill Collins put forth a comprehensive approach for understanding the intersections of race with gender, sexuality, and class in the lives of black women and men. Hill Collins explained that “oppression cannot be reduced to fundamental type, and that oppressions work together in producing injustice” (2000:18). In using this intersectional framework, she critiqued previous scholarship in which on dimension of......

Sw Federal Taxation 2011

...Chapter 10 Operational Assets: Acquisition and Disposition Questions for Review of Key Topics Question 10-1 The term operational asset is used to describe the broad category of long-lived assets that are used in the production of goods and services. The difference between tangible and intangible assets is that intangible assets lack physical substance and they primarily refer to the ownership of rights. Question 10-2 The cost of an operational asset includes the purchase price (less any discounts received from the seller), transportation costs paid by the buyer to transport the asset to the location in which it will be used, expenditures for installation, testing, legal fees to establish title, and any other costs of bringing the asset to its condition and location for use. Question 10-3 The cost of a developed natural resource includes the acquisition costs for the use of land, the exploration and development costs incurred before production begins, and the restoration costs incurred during or at the end of extraction. Question 10-4 Purchased intangibles are valued at their original cost to include the purchase price and all other necessary costs to bring the asset to condition and location for use. Research and development costs incurred to internally develop an intangible asset are expensed in the period incurred. Filing and legal costs for both purchased and developed intangibles are capitalized. Question......

...include our VHDL code(the VHDL code will be attached in appendices part); 3. Import assignment and compile; 4. Download the compiled circuit and test. Results We found that if we turn off SW17, SW16 and SW15 which means the arrangement of the 3 control signal is 000, the LEDG0/1/2 will be on if the SW0/1/2 is on. If we change the arrangement of control signal, it will represent the different chosen signal. Conclusion Because this circuit is created by 4 same 2-1 multiplexer, we can create 3 inner assumed outputs in the architecture section which makes it easier to show the relationship between these multiplexers. There are some little errors in our VHDL code, such as some missing about ‘)’ and ‘;’, the missing about not connecting SW and LEDR. But we finally fix it. Part IV Objectives This is a 7-segment decoder module which has 3 inputs C0, C1 and C2. Each segment represents one output, so first we write the Boolean expression through the truth table between C2-0 and HEXO6-0. Then we assign the expression with only C to the HEXO in the architecture section. Notably, the default value is 0. SW2-0 represent the C2-0, HEXO0-6 control the 7 segments in the display board to display characters: “HELO”. LEDR connected to the switches. Equipment DE2 package, Altera’s Quartus II Design and Test Procedure 1. Create a new project(as same as in Part I); 2. Create a new VHDL file and include our VHDL code(the VHDL code will be attached in appendices part); ......

Sw Description

...Corey Greenwood Additional Job Skills Students with Disabilities Need to be Successful in a Workplace 1) Self Motivation: While self motivation and a positive attitude are often considered an innate ability, this can not be further from the truth. Teaching youth positive motivational skills is a huge portion of what most school level extracurricular activities is all about. When brought into the work environment, this can be a massive benefit for a person with disabilities. To be able to remain motivated to continue looking for work when jobs are scarce is a large aspect on actually obtaining the job in the first place. Making sure that when they are actually on the clock, they continue to remain positive about their work, especially if it is a job that they might not like, will help in both maintaining the current job and opening future doors for future positions. 2) Being able to address their own needs, along with the needs of the employer/job: It is a rare situation to find an employee that never once misses a day of work. When you need to miss a day of work, for sickness, emergency situations, emotional stress or pretty much anything, you need to be able to communicate your needs to your employer. Without this line of communication, the situation breaks down and quickly goes into a negative scenario. Communication of needs can also be in the reverse. Sometimes as an employee, you need to be able to communicate the wants and needs of the employer to......

Sw Case Answers

...It is a creative essay (about 1500 words) based on the analysis of the case that formulates vision of the company’s growth strategy and addresses the following questions: 1. Would you consider the airline industry as attractive to compete in?  NOTE: analyze industry’s dynamic evolution; apply Porter’s Five Forces model; explore opportunities and threats for being in the industry. Today? No, the airline industry is not attractive (cost structure – 80% fixed cost-, high barriers to enter – route, gates, …, etc.) 2. Why and how Southwest Airlines was able to grow into the industry leader? NOTE: make five key statements and provide supporting arguments for each statement. Southwest Airlines was able to grow into the industry leader mainly for the following reasons: a) Short-haul and point-to-point routes Southwest airlines reevaluated the traditional model hub-and-spoke used by major players based on a different point of view: the customers’ one. Indeed, customers prefer a trip point to point, especially on routes below 500 miles. Besides they generally prefer airports near as possible to the center of the destination city. Understanding these elements, Southwest airlines focused its attention on building an offer of domestic short-haul (less than 500 miles), point-to-point flights. b) High frequency flights Southwest airlines increased the number of flights per day through a reduced turnaround time. Indeed the company was able to......

Sw Airlines Mkt Plan

...Ryan McHugh Marketing Plan Southwest Airlines Green Initiatives Executive Summary Southwest Airlines was formed in 1971 as a small airline in texas offering services between Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Its goal at the time was to provide to customers an airline that got passengers to their destinations on time, for a low price, while making it an enjoyable experience overall. By taking these simple goals and making them a reality for customers, Southwest has been able to expand into a well know and recognized domestic airline. Today the company is able to fly over 100 million passengers a year to 66 cities across the U.S. offering over 3,000 flights daily. Southwest is focused on serving its customers with respect and satisfying customer needs to the best of their ability while maintaining the highest quality service and lowest prices. The company has been able to take advantage of the gaps within the domestic travel market where competitor airlines have failed. These gap exists in low cost service, onboard amenities, excellence in customer service, and the realization of a need for more environmentally friendly airline services. Research and projections indicate that the use of the current business plan coupled with the introduction of Green Initiatives will be sufficient in maintaining the current success and increasing future revenues for the initiatives. In 2007, Southwest began reporting on their current and future environmental initiatives. They have......
