Poliicy otes Policy notes ly
NICHES is a Coordination Action funded by the European Commission under the Sixth Framework Programme for R&D, Priority 6.2 Sustainable Surface Transport

What is it about?
Characteristics
Public Bicycles:

• •

are innovative schemes of rental or free bicycles in urban areas; can be used for daily mobility as one-way-use is possible and they can be seen as part of the public transport system; differ from traditional, mostly leisure-oriented bicycle rental services as they provide fast and easy access; have diversified in organisational layout, the business models and the applied technology towards “smart bikes” (rental process via smart card or mobile phone).

Example: Vélo’v in Lyon
How did the French City of Lyon encourage thousands of people to use the bicycle as urban transport mode within a few months? A big part of this success story is due to the introduction of the Public Bicycle scheme vélo’v. Each of the 2,000 bicycles available

provides a fast, convenient and flexible inner urban transport option; can be a “door opener” to increase the acceptance of cycling as urban transport mode in cities which still lack a good level of bicycle use; also makes sense in cities that have a good level of cycling as it adds a valuable element to existing mobility services; increases sustainable mobility choices at low cost when compared to other public transport measures; encourages intermodal travelling.

the scheme helped to increase the bicycle share in the modal split. The use of bicycles increased by 44% within a year. The service is a public private partnership between Grand Lyon and the billboard company JCDecaux.

European countries with Public Bicycle schemes

Is this something for us?
In the last years a portfolio of different Public Bicycle schemes has been developed (see last page “Further information”), which enables cities interested in their take-up to choose the right scheme for their needs and targets. Key conditions for implementation are: “Very quickly, we’ve moved from being a curiosity to a genuine new urban transport mode. We invented the publicindividual transport.”
Gilles Vesco Vice-président du Grand Lyon, France, on the vélo’v scheme

A strong commitment to sustainable urban transport planning and to the promotion of cycling as a serious transport mode; A minimum standard of bicycle infrastructure for safe and convenient cycling; Sufficient resources for a large scale scheme to achieve a real impact; Sufficient space for racks/parking to guarantee the accessibility of bicycles.

City size Costs Most suitable for medium to large cities (> 200,000 inhabitants). Compared to traditional public transport: relatively cost-efficient solution, but (depending on the type of scheme) low to considerable start-up and running cost. Bike Riding

...learned to ride a bike. It was a wicked experience. Many things went wrong. My dad was the one who taught me, and helped me when I got hurt. The first time I had even gotten on a bike, I did it totally wrong. The handlebars were backwards, and so was my cool helmet. My dad told me just to put my feet on the pedals and start peddling. He also said he would hold on the back the whole time, yet he didn’t. As soon as I started balancing myself, he let go. Boy what a mistake that was. I looked back and realized that he had let go. I was scared to death that I was going to fall. When I was scared, I mysteriously forgot how to use the brakes and crashed right into a fence. My dad kept encouraging me to get up and try again, and after about 15 minutes, I finally got up and tried to ride the bicycle. But I still failed to bike it. As a results, I falled in the drain. There was a scratch on my knee, my nose was bleeding and there was a small hurt at my elbow. The next morning I woke up bright and early, and very eager to try to ride my bike. My nose had felt better, so I wasn’t that afraid of falling anymore. This time I had knee pads, elbow pads, wrist pads, and of course my helmet. I was all set to go, when suddenly it started to drizzle. My dad told me that it was still “OK” to ride because it wasn’t raining that hard. When I began to ride again, everything seemed to be going right as I was peddling. I thought I mastered the art of riding a bike, and then all......

...APA Alan Jankewicz 205 12152012 Dorch APA After evaluating the Dirt Bikes organization, I recommend the following solutions: Since the Dirt Bikes organization already provides Internet access to all employees who use desktop computers, it would be beneficial to create a private network by using the existing network infrastructure paired up with Internet connectivity standards and software developed for the World Wide Web (WWW). According to Laudon and Laudon (2009), Internet networking standards and Web technology used to create private networks are called intranets. An intranet is private and secure and is protected by a firewall which prevents unauthorized individuals from entering the network. Intranet software technology and that of the WWW is the same. Having quick access to accurate information can be vital to a sales and marketing department. The sales and marketing department could benefit from using an intranet by being able to look up sales reports, product information, marketing analysis, and researching competitors are just one click away. The human resources department could benefit from having an intranet because they could eliminate using large amounts of paper. The human resources department could upload employee handbooks, benefits information, job listings and applications, newsletters, and new employee interactive training, as well as other information that would save paper costs. The manufacturing and production departments could benefit......

Recumbent Bikes

...Recumbent Bikes Problem Statement Modern bicycles require a forward posture and a lot of strain on the neck and back. Recumbent bikes, however, relieve this strain by putting the rider in an upwards position. The main issue with recumbent bike designs is that they lack comfortable in the seat position and the need for a adjustable seat padding for all heights. Also, additional frame and/or an overly long chain that reaches to the back wheel. Our team intends on fixing this concern by incorporating the drive shaft within the front wheel in a comfortable and elegant location. This problem was addressed by our client John Trotter. John is interested in using a recumbent bike to travel between home and work, but is not fond of current models. Current models require ones feet to be significantly elevated compared to the body and come with a high price due to their size and amount of material needed. John proposed that a front wheel drive be incorporated into a recumbent bike. Moving the transmission to the front wheel will result in fewer materials, lower the cost needed to produce, and allow for more comfortable designs to be created. Our end-product will be a front wheel transmission prototype created using a 3-D printer. This prototype can then be presented to various bike manufacturing companies to be received as a potential model for a full recumbent bike design. Customers for this product include anyone who enjoys riding a bike and is looking for something new on the......

Bike Accident

...How cool do we all (the young guns) think of biking The recent shooting incident by the police left the Police Authority to answer innumerable questions as to what was the need of taking a bikers life (Karan Pandey) along with a brutal injury to his mate (Punit Sharma) while they thought of enjoying with friends while riding their bikes. Do we all get the answers we want? The next question to my mind is why are police authorities concerned about people driving their bikes in midnight when there isn’t any kind of traffic on the roads and why do police let these people do what they want. The answer to this comes here: Delhi is a city with young boys in whom there’s a rush as to things they find attracting and things which they consider would provide them with a big man’s popularity. Do all Stuntmen want to become Craig Jones? Under the section 189, Motor Vehicle Act: Racing or speeding in any public place without any written consent of the state government SHALL be punishable with term of 6 months imprisonment and repeating the same offence could lead to further trouble. Basically, the roads have been full of illegality and such kind of Violations and now we all rise up to this issue. Why?? Considering the fact that such illegality won’t be tolerated its completely up to us are we ready to borne the punishment or follow the norms that society has created for us. The newly created Buddh circuit has been created for people to ride their vehicles in whichever way they want,......

...Dirt Bike’s Internet Tools Ann Isaacs IT205 – Management of Information Systems November 10, 2013 Karen Cann Communication is a key element in the success of any business and an intranet is just the way to help your business accomplish this task. The use of intranets within an organization such as Dirt Bikes will prove to be beneficial in increasing sales, communication between employees, vendors, suppliers and provide up-to-date information to all types of customers. Human Resources, Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing and Production are all teams that can benefit from this service. The Intranet enables the company to incorporate information from customers and vendors in an effort to find their own business process, resulting in finding the best solution for each. Employees can access company information from anywhere, not just at the office. The ease of use is very promising and unlike older systems everyone can be on the same system. Sales and Marketing departments can benefit from intranets, providing accurate and quick access of reports, marketing initiatives, product information, and competitor’s offers or sales. Very different from the internet, an intranet is an internal system within a company that all employees can access. The intranet will serve the purpose of provoking organization, communication and process simplification. The intranet will provide a company and its employees first hand access to advertising and marketing,......

What is your overall strategy (Selling on Price or Value?) A. If selling on low price, what is the implication for decisions you will make on spending (Advertising, PR, Branding, Channel Support, Quality, Efficiency, etc.)? My Overall strategy eventually was to provide a moderately priced product at suggested cost and again and medial quality. After dabbling in the program for a while, I began to somewhat realize how things worked. I noticed through the reports that the Mountain Bike relied mostly on advertising, and PR had a “low” impact on overall sales, so it stated. I began by advertising it heavily in the areas in which the marketing reports stated reached the target audience the most. I completely avoided the PR since it was stated to have little impact on sales for this specific product. I had also avoided Branding at first and wanted to focus more on the when I had multiple products on sale. I began to notice as I went that even though the share price was increasing, my sales and product awareness were lacking, especially in comparison to the competitions sales even though my price was quite lower than theirs. I assume this is due to...

There was so much interest in Carl and Steve’s bikes that they decided to open a production facility that could manufacture large numbers of their dirt bikes for the retail market. They opened a small production facility in Carbondale which has since expanded to house 120 workers involved in production,......

...injuries that come with such a collision. We would be drawing their attention in with the example of a biker running a red light and then by showing our audience the stats, we would make them think about how truly dangerous riding a bike incorrectly and against the law can be. After that I would familiarize our audience with the most important laws of bicycle riding. This would show them how to correctly use a bike around high traffic areas, and would help them avoid an accident like what was shown by our example. Such laws could include ones like how to use the bike lane properly and the need for wearing a helmet before and after the ages of 18. How to always be cautious of your surroundings, and on the watch for cars, How to always ride in the direction of traffic, and how to always put yourself in the safest position while sharing the road with cars. Each of these laws could be explained while showing a short clip of an individual following the law and smiling while they enjoy a nice day out while riding their bike. After our point has been made and our audience has been educated on these laws and regulations, I would show a clip of some friends enjoying a bike ride safely outside and through the use of our video encourage all to enjoy safe bike riding together....

Dirt Bikes

...Internet Tools and Dirt Bikes By: Anthony Williams Based upon the information given to us, Dirt Bikes first order of business should be to sit down and draw up a plan regarding how they will proceed and what they will need to achieve that goal followed by an Internet and Information and tools usage policy. First thing to determine is how many of Dirt Bikes employees actually need computers or mobile devices and of those that need a PC or mobile device, who needs access to the internet in order to do their job. Like everything else, without a plan as in many other business aspects, implementation of an Intranet is doomed to fail without being properly planned. After determining their needs we need to look at the benefits of intranets for Sales and Marketing, Human Resources and Manufacturing and Production. An intranet is inexpensive to implement and easy to use. Because a majority of people surf the web/internet already, implementation and learning how to use the company intranet should be fairly easy. Intranets are also scalable and flexible which means as the company increases production and or size so can its intranet. Intranets can integrate data from diverse sources, such as manufacturing and production along with sales and marketing, external competitor research, etcetera. Company intranets with different focuses can offer Dirt Bikes many benefits such as improved decision making, empowering users to be part of the process and have input by building......

...Dirt Bike Inc. is a company that manufactures and sells its own brand of off road motorcycles. In order for the company to increase sale, better market, reduce labor, and secure private information some changes have to be made. The meaning of this paper is to provide supervision on how the intranet and information technology services can be beneficial for Dirt Bikes Inc. Companies that start off small, and in time gain success, can only uphold that success by investing a percentage of their yearly profits back into the company. Over the years Dirt Bike has evolved into a profitable company and yet they are still willing to find a new way of increasing sales, and making their company more significant. Dirt Bike has a hundred or more employees that are divided up into different departments. There is a sales team, and marketing, Human Resource department and an engineering and production department. Dirt Bike provides internet access and desktop computers to its staff. But in order to become more effective and to better customer services clients and consumers changes need to be made. In business today it is a necessity for communication channels to be as proficient as possible.
