General role and job description[edit]
Various artists may create or develop specific parts of an art piece or scene; but it is the charge of a sole art director to supervise and unify the vision. In particular, the art director is in charge of the overall visual appearance and how it communicates visually, stimulates moods, contrasts features, and psychologically appeals to a target audience. The art director makes decisions about visual elements used, what artistic style to use, and when to use motion.
One of the most difficult problems that art directors face is to translate desired moods, messages, concepts, and underdeveloped ideas into imagery. During the brainstorming process, art directors, co-workers, and clients are engaged in imagining what the finished piece or scene might look like. At times, an art director is ultimately responsible for solidifying the vision of the collective imagination while resolving conflicting agenda and inconsistencies between the various individual inputs.
-------------------------------------------------
Interfacing between information technologies and marketing activities[edit]
A coordination among the different professionals in the mentioned areas is wanted, under the supervision of an experienced leader who will decide the last characteristics of the final promotional products in the services companies. The art director activities and responsibility will avoid the possible loops in the development of the products, with some wasting of time and productivity, throughout the statement of some guidelines defining the most suitable features of that products.
-------------------------------------------------
In advertising[edit]
Despite the title, an advertising art director is not necessarily the head of an art department. In modern advertising practice, an art director typically works in tandem with a copywriter. The team usually works together to devise an overall concept (also known as the "creative" or "big idea") for the commercial, mailer, brochure, or other advertisement. The copywriter is responsible for the textual content, the art director for the visual aspects. But the art director may come up with the headline or other copy, and the copywriter may suggest a visual or the aesthetic approach. Each person usually welcomes suggestions and constructive criticism from the other. Ideally, the words and visual should not parrot each other; each should enhance or enlarge the other's meaning and effect.
Although a good art director is expected to have graphic design judgment and technical knowledge of production, it may not be necessary for an art director to hand-render comprehensive layouts(or even be able to draw), now that virtually all but the most preliminary work is done on computer.
Except in the smallest organizations, the art director/copywriter team is overseen by a creative director, senior media creative, chief creative director. In a large organization, an art director may oversee other art directors and a team of junior designers, image developers and/or production artists, and coordinates with a separate production department. In a smaller organization, the art director may fill all these roles, including oversight of printing and other production.
-------------------------------------------------
In film[edit]
An Art Director, in the hierarchical structure of a film art department, works directly below the [production designer], in collaboration with the Set Decorator, and above the set designers. A large part of their duties include the administrative aspects of the art department. They are responsible for assigning tasks to personnel such as the Art Department Coordinator, and the Construction Coordinator, keeping track of the art department budget and scheduling (i.e. Prep/Wrap Schedule) as well as overall quality control. They are often also a liaison to other departments; especially Construction, Special FX, Property, Transportation (graphics), and Locations Departments. The Art Director also attends all production meetings and tech scouts in order to provide information to the set designers in preparation for all departments to have a visual floor plan of each location visited.
In the past, the title of Art Director was used to denote the head of the art department (hence the Academy Award for Best Art Direction ) which also included the Set Decorator. Now the Award includes the Production Designer and Set Decorator. On the movie Gone with the Wind, David O. Selznick felt that William Cameron Menzies had such a significant role in the look of the film, that the title Art Director was not sufficient and so he gave Menzies the title of Production Designer.[2] The title has become more common, and now Production Designer is commonly used as the title for the head of the Art Department, although the title actually implies control over every visual aspect of a film, including costumes.…...

Strategic Directions

...Featured Chapter Creating a Strategic Direction Visions and Values Paul Olk, Peter Rainsford, and Tsungting Chung ncreased globalization and the incorporation of many new information technology (IT) tools have enhanced the need for top management to set a clear strategic vision for a company. As market demands and the ability to communicate globally encourage companies to continue to expand into new geographical and product markets—and as they also enter into long-term buyer-supplier relationships or contract out activities previously conducted internally—companies are spread more thinly. This creates a challenge of how to coordinate all of the activities conducted around the globe and by partner organizations. While sophisticated software programs (e.g., enterprise resource planning [ERP]) or intranet capabilities enhance internal communication, these are not adequate. Establishing and maintaining a consistent strategic direction for the company begins with setting a clear vision for the company. A strategic vision provides multiple benefits to a company. First, it presents a broadly shared sense of organizational direction and purpose. Direction is needed because few organizations have achieved greatness by being all things to all consumers. To instill a purpose, most successful companies achieved their leadership position by adopting a vision far greater than their resource base and competencies would allow (de Kluyver & Pearce, 2002; Hamel & Prahalad, 1989). Exhibition Review: Art of Change: New Directions from China and the Discourse of the Ridiculous and the Sublime.

...Art of Change: New Directions from China and The Discourse of the Ridiculous and the Sublime. Art of Change: New Directions from China, Hayward Gallery, London, UK, 7th September 2011 to 9th December 2012. While long regarded as two ends of the spectrum, the Sublime and the Ridiculous have never been seen as two aspects that are inherently irreconcilable. The Ridiculous, when utilized effectively, is able to assist in perpetuating the sublime despite their disparate natures. The Ridiculous in art has the ability to probe sublimities that deal with transcendence and venturing beyond liminal boundaries. However, the relationship between the Sublime and the Ridiculous must be one of careful consideration as when construed inappropriately, the ridiculous nature of an artwork can overblow and nullify the Sublime, rendering it as purely ridiculous in its entirety, displaying the precarious nature between the Sublime and the Ridiculous and how “one step above the sublime makes the ridiculous and one step above the ridiculous makes the sublime” The discourse on the relationship between the Ridiculous and the Sublime of this essay will start with the works of Chinese artist Duan Ying Mei that are located early in the exhibition, Art of Change: New Directions from China. Duan’s Sleeping, 2004/2012 (Fig.1), a performance installation of a live performer silently sleeping on a white shelf elevated high up on a gallery wall. Leadership and Direction

...Introduction As leaders you should be expected to coordinate to ensure provision in your organization. In order to accomplish a well organize organization as a leader you need to have a plan on how you’re going to direct your employees. The article on leadership & direction it outlines on how to have direction and control to execute methods for continues improvement for a leader by using the PDCA Cycle ( Plan, Do, Check, Act), it is a four step method that uses not only direction and control to execute, but also provide and iterative process for continues improvement (“Big dog &”, 1997,para 1). Based on this article I will be answering and explaining the following. How do questions helps to ensure that a project is successful, what type of questions must be asked and answered to ensure the project is appropriate for the organization and how does a leader know if all the right questions have been asked. Questions that help ensure that a project is successful In my opinion questions help to ensure that a project is successful because if you don’t ask questions were are unlikely to get the information we need to make good decisions. According to the article Leadership & Direction “Good plans start with brainstorming” (“Big dog &”, 1997, para, 2). By asking questions the team is able to plan positive forces and events and then taking action to avoid any obstruction that might put the project at risk of failing. Any information received by your employees by asking the......

Arts

...As a lover of art I tend to find, beauty in everything some way. Whether it be a simple flower out in a field of brown grass, or a pattern that everyone thinks looks too busy. I didn’t realize how the ‘Beauty is all around you’ quote would fit me until I actually started to study it. No, I’m not art major because I can’t draw to save my life, but I found that studying it for a hobby is more relaxing than I thought it would have been. Living in New York City, I was able to go to an art museum every weekend. Look at the different paintings on the wall and feel a different emotion for each. If was funny how an 18x24 painting could make me feel so different about certain things. All a painting is and ever will be, and lines and different stroke one a white canvas if you break it down bit by bit. But together those line and strokes make something beautiful. When I moved from New York I thought I would have to give up that passion for a whole year. I, personally knew that I could do it but then I would be bored on my weekends, something I didn’t want to happen ever especially since I felt I was moving to the middle of nowhere. But I was mistaken when I found out that El Paso had an art museum. That was very shocking news to me, I know not everywhere has an art museum or a museum at all. Recently I was able to visit, I know it’s not good to compare two things together all the time, of course the El Paso art museum isn’t, The Metropolitan Museum of Art or the Whitney Museum of......

One Direction

...In 2010, five boys beat hundred of thousands others to get the coveted spots in the seventh series "The X Factor". Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson did not know each other before the audition of the British talent show but they were grouped together by fate and later achieved fame in one direction. The members applied as solo candidates but they did not qualify as "Boys" category, thus judge Nicole Scherzinger suggested them to form a group so that they would qualify as "Groups". One Direction began toppling their competition one by one although they remained the only group in its category. With Simon Cowell as their mentor, One Direction managed to finish third behind runner-up Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt Cardle. But One Direction were the quickest to break through the charts in United Kingdom and United States. Their supposed winning song "Forever Young" was leaked online after the "X Factor" final. The group signed a recording deal with Syco Records and they went on the annual contestants tour through April 2011. Meanwhile, work on their debut album was also moving fast. "What Makes You Beautiful" was released as the first U.K. Single in September 2011. The song successfully landed at number on U.K. Singles chart. "Gotta Be You" was released as one last bullet before the album "Up All Night" was released in November 2011 and took the second spot of U.K. Albums chart by selling more than 138,000 copies in the first week....

...INTRODUCTION In all of human history, art has mirrored life in the community, society, and the world in all its colors, lines, shapes, and forms. The same has been true in the last two centuries, with world events and global trends being reflected in the art movements. The decades from 1900 to the present have seen the human race living in an ever shrinking planet. The 20th century saw a boom in the interchange of ideas, beliefs, values, and lifestyles that continues to bring the citizens of the world closer together. Technological breakthroughs From the Industrial Revolution of the late 1800s, the world zoomed into the Electronic. Age in the mid-1900s, then into the present Cyberspace Age. In just over 100 years, humans went from hand-cranked telephones to hands-free mobile phones, from the first automobiles to inter-planetary space vehicles, from local radio broadcasting to international news coverage via satellite, from vaccinations against polio and smallpox to laser surgery. Social, political, and environmental changes There has been migration across the globe, allowing different cultures, languages, skills, and even physical characteristics of different races to intermingle like never before. The 20th century also suffered through two World Wars, and several regional wars in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. There was the Great Depression of the 1930s, and the Asian economic crisis of the 1990s. Considered the modern-day plague, AIDS has......

...followers and the organizational setting. For the leader, the imperative is to use a leadership style that best meets followers’ motivational needs. This is done by choosing behaviors that complement or supplement what is missing in the work setting. Leaders try to enhance followers’ goal attainment by providing information or rewards in the work environment (Indvik, 1986); leaders provide followers with the elements they think followers need to reach their goals. According to House and Mitchell (1974), leadership generates motivation when it increases the number and kinds of payoffs that followers receive from their work. Leadership also motivates when it makes the path to the goal clear and easy to travel through coaching and direction, removing obstacles and roadblocks to attaining the goal, and making the work itself more personally satisfying (Figure 6.1).   Path-Goal Theory Copyright ©2016 by SAGE Publications, Inc. The Direction of Sports

...The Direction of Sports As a sports fan I am concerned about the directions sports have taken.  Sports in general have been headed in the wrong direction for some time now.  They still have a lot of time to change.  They need to act quickly though if they want to solve the problem.  Every major sport seems to have a problem.  Baseball had their huge problem with steroids, basketball has a reputation of its players being thugs, but football seems to have no major problem.  Many of these problems have not only affected the leagues, they have affected the youth all across America.  Like the problems the solutions are very diverse.  I love all sports, and I would hate to see them become disgraced.   Baseball which is my favorite sport has had the most trouble in the past couple of years.  Their decline started with the steroid scandal involving Barry Bonds.  When a player that big in the game is going after a cherished home run record and there are scandals surrounding it, there is going to be some turmoil.  It wasn’t just Barry Bonds fault and the people involved in the scandal, it was also baseball officials fault for not doing anything when they knew about the things going on in baseball.  They turned their back to the problem because at the time baseball was doing well and they didn’t want to disrupt that.  Baseball was forced to act because of the scandal.  They put in a steroid policy that was laughable compared to the steroid policy of the Olympics.  Baseball would......

Well, I am on the main road, a dark, dimly lit main road. I looked back, did I miss another point of direction. I am to turn left after Tot Spot and the Scarlet Women sign advertising a play currently running. Oh, at last, there is the early childhood centre, not much of a childhood centre if you want my opinion. So, where is the Scarlet Women sign? I am getting worried now, after thirty minutes, I should have reached her home by now. I’m going back to ‘Tot Spot’ and start again. Some directions, the Scarlet Women sign is on the other side of the road, facing the other way. My blood pressure is rising, I’m starting to get emotional and stressed. Strategic Direction

...Running head: STRATEGIC DIRECTION—HOME DEPOT Strategic Direction—Home Depot Keller Graduate School of Management J. Lambrou, Professor Strategic Direction Introduction What is Strategic Direction? This means taking your company in a direction related to what’s happening in the dynamic environment of what the business provides (be it in a services, manufacturing, technological, or financial area). (Olsen, 2007) Therefore, the strategy and direction the company take are defined by what established and unique value propositions the company has when compared to competitors; operations executed to provide different and tailored value to customers; clearly identifies any tradeoffs and clarifies what not to do; focuses on activities that fit together and reinforce each other; and is continually driven for improvement within the organization and while moving it toward its defined vision. I use The Home Depot (Home Depot here-out) for this paper as I have a part-time job with them. Strategy Home Depot’s simple and straightforward strategy is to ensure it diversifies its operations by having several businesses competing in the different product markets of home improvement. (Home Depot, 2008) The Home Depot has positioned itself within the industry based on a strategy of cost leadership. This operating strategy allows the company to earn above-average profitability by dictating prices from suppliers lowering input costs and minimizing distribution transactions......
