Encosts Memories
Case 1: Encosta Memories 1) a) No, it is not correct.
b) The statement is not correct because once a system is acquired. Whether it is internally designed or externally purchased. It still requires regular IT maintenance. Some Examples are IT security, protection from hackers or problems, IT technical support. IT performance includes the ability to reduce downtime, increase storage capacity and so on. IT maintenance requires ongoing costs and that you can not be one hundred percent certain that there will be no money spent on IT in the future.

2) It may not be necessary for Encosta Memories to employ a programmer to design a new system if they purchase the software externally. The design of the software can be done by the suppliers to the companies specifications. Since Encosta Memories does not have any IT experts they can consider outsourcing their IT work. Thus In-house software is not an option because they do not have any IT experts.

3) System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) requires regular reports to top management regarding IT maintenance. For example the security protection, customer related, and its performance etc. Requires regular reporting to top management.

Application Service Provider (ASP) the service is provided by the vendor but the user may access it through the internet or the Virtual Private Network, they also provide regular updates and bug fixes. Although the information is provided for the users via the internet, it may still need someone with certain IT skills to understand that information.

Outsourcing is finding another company, usually one that specializes in IT to help the company do all or most of its IT based work. Useful if the company lacks IT experts and if it is cheaper to outsource.
Based on the facts given the company is concerned that it needs to hire a programmer and a full-time IT specialist…...

Accounting measures business transactions and as such can help direct managers in the right course with concrete information. Principally accounting information is a tool for managers to make business decisions on a timely manner. For example, if by using accounting information, managers notice that the trend is for sales to decrease, then they can take measures to stop this trend. Maybe they need to change prices or decrease expenses to handle the down-trend. ...The European Accounting Review 2002, 11:1, 119–151 Accounting and capital markets: a survey of the European evidence Pascal Dumontier ` Pierre Mendes-France University, Grenoble Bernard Raffournier University of Geneva ABSTRACT The relationship between accounting information and capital markets has been the subject of numerous studies, especially in the US. The purpose of this article is to examine the corresponding evidence in Europe. This review classi es the European literature into three groups: studies of the market reaction to newly released accounting information; studies of the long-term association between stock returns and accounting numbers; studies devoted to the use of accounting data by investors and to the impact of market pressure on accounting choices. The paper reviews and summarizes the main results related to each of these topics. It also addresses some methodological issues and provides suggestions for future research. 1. The interest for this subject is legitimate, given the generally accepted statement that accounting gures are aimed at providing investors with relevant information for their investment decisions. Qualities of Effective Accounting Information

...Accounting information contains qualitative characteristics that make it useful to existing and potential investors, lenders, and other creditors for making decisions about an organization. A decision maker needs to determine which alternative provides the most useful information for decision-making purposes (Kieso, Weygandt, & Warfield, 2007). To make the information useful, effective accounting information needs to be understandable to a reasonably informed user and contain primary qualities of relevance and reliability and secondary qualities of comparability and consistency. Understandability The quality of information that lets reasonably informed users see its significance is understandability. “It is a qualitative characteristic that enables users to comprehend the information and therefore make it useful for making decisions” (FASB, 2010, p. 30). It creates a link between the users and the decisions they make. Effective accounting information must be useful and understandable so a decision maker can determine which alternative provides the most useful information to make a decision. Primary qualities The primary qualities that distinguish information as more useful over information that is less useful are relevance and reliability (Kieso, Weygandt, Warfield, 2007). Accounting Information

...Accounting information can be useful in predicting financial performance. It is the way in which the information is used in conjunction with other available information that allows for greater success in the predictions. Also, the predictions may only be short-term future predictions. The article, ‘Financial Ratios, Discriminant Analysis and the Prediction of Corporate Bankruptcy’ proved that ratios used as part of a model were extremely accurate in predicting bankruptcy up to two years prior to the actual event. The ‘discriminant-ratio model’ was developed to bridge the gap between traditional ratio analysis and other statistical techniques which had become popular, as at this time there seemed to be a move toward the elimination of traditional ratio analysis in assessing future firm performance. The model sampled thirty-six firms and placed them in one of two groups: bankrupt and non-bankrupt. From this point, balance sheet and income statement data was collected and five ratios calculated and placed in the model calculation. The model was found to be 94% accurate in predicting bankruptcy two years prior to the actual event. This article was important, as it showed that individual ratio measurements take on great significance when integrated with analytical discriminant analysis, but only in the short-term. The article ‘Are Financial Measures Leading Indicators of Firm Performance’ also indicated that no one ratio is superior in predicting future performance, but rather...
