The Scars of War

...The Scars of War Lou Hampton United States History 1763-1877 September 18, 2012 During the 1840s and 1850s, great change was coming to America. Northerners lived in a world of change in which they hardly understood. Their confusions and anxieties of that world made them ready for conflict. However, it was not completely clear what they were fighting for. The war wiped away their confusions and revealed to them where they stood and defined what kind of people they might be. Social and economic changes were happening as the North headed toward war. The economy accelerated, increased output, generated more wealth, moved products and people at faster speeds, transmitted information more rapidly and linked distant places by rail, telegraph and newspapers. New inventions, industries and products had sprung to life. The population multiplied six fold and the amount and size of cities were continuing their growth. There were 400 places with over 2,500 people. Swelling its possibilities, the nation expanded in size when in 1845 Texas joined the Union. Another factor in the nation’s growth was in 1846 when the Oregon territorial boundary was settled. The sudden economic growth was not as beneficial as it seemed. Per capita wealth was growing but there was a decline in actual wages. The North controlled about 92 percent of the wealth. This helped fuel sectionalism because the Southerners became afraid that they would lose their own culture and power in Congress. ......

Invisible Scars

...Research Paper Invisible Scars Putt, Putt, Boom! The car in front of me backfires and I instinctively swerve to the right to avoid it while jumping 2 feet in my seat. This is my reality and is also the reality of so many of my brothers in arms. We served our great nation in Operation Iraqi Freedom; some of us came home, while others didn’t. For those of us who returned, our inner being had been destroyed by the sights and experiences that we were exposed to during our deployments. We are victims, suffering from wounds that can’t be seen, but by internal wounds that we struggle with on a daily basis. We will never be the same. Many veterans return from war and are unable to adapt to the life they once knew. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most widely recognized lasting effects of war in service members. PTSD is a mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened (Department of Veterans Affairs). Every day while patrolling roads in Iraq we had to be aware of our surroundings and not become complacent. Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were one of the most common threats we were exposed to. These bombs were hidden in the ground like landmines, unable to be seen with a naked eye, and could only be detected by using metal detectors, the eye in the sky, or being ran over. On several occasions my men and I were directly hit by an IED causing shrapnel to penetrate......

Acne and Its Remedies

...Acne and Its Remedies by Hanna Rejas This is an article about acne. I am writing about this because most people, especially teenagers have this skin problem. For almost 8 years, I suffered this skin problem. It started when I was a junior in high school and it lasted until I graduated from the university. I know a lot of people who have acne. My younger siblings even complain about this. I know how it feels. I am sharing this so that other people may benefit from my experience and how I dealt with it. Acne vulgaris or simply acne is a common human skin disease, characterized by areas of skin with seborrhea (scaly red skin), comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules (pinheads), nodules (large papules), pimples, and possibly scarring. Acne affects mostly skin with the densest population of sebaceous follicles; these areas include the face, the upper part of the chest, and the back. In my case, during the worst part of it, I have acne all over my face, neck and back. The worst part is my face, it looks red and it has lots of scars and it made me feel bad about myself. Aside from scarring, its main effects are psychological, such as reduced self-esteem and in very extreme cases, depression or suicide. Acne usually appears during adolescence, when people already tend to be most socially insecure. Early and aggressive treatment is therefore advocated by some to lessen the overall long-term impact to individuals. As we all know, acne occurs most commonly during......

Our grandparents and older folks would swear of the healing properties of herbs, leaves, roots and seeds that cured diseases which they contracted. The fact that our ancestors survived proved that some of the many remedies used then, did work and have increasing practical applications today. Arrowroot is a common plant of Guyana. Napoleon supposedly said the reason for the British love of arrowroot was to support the commerce of......

8 Rules of Effective Writting

...8 Rules of Effective Content in Document Design “Are the documents being designed for your organization getting tossed or getting attention?” Whether you're creating a business card, letter, brochure, advertisement, newsletter or proposal, effective design can sell your ideas and make them easier to understand. According to Roger C. Parker, design consultant and author of 22 graphic design books, the appearance of your print communications directly influences your ability to inform, motivate and persuade. Here's why. Just as you "read" people when you first meet them - forming impressions based on their posture, clothing, facial expressions and voice tone - readers judge your ideas based on first impressions of your documents. If the document is cluttered or disorganized, readers will likely disregard your ideas - no matter how brilliant they are. The good news is that design basics are the same for most documents. To improve the design of all your organization's print communications, especially those you create electronically, look for these eight basic rules of effective design. Communicate your purpose Start by defining the purpose of your design i.e. direct plan versus Indirect plan. Parker suggests first determining whether you are designing the document for attention or for transparency. Design for attention when your message must compete for your reader's attention. Book covers and posters are two examples. Use the appropriate colors, type and......
