1. Josie receives a book on the probability and statistics of teen pregnancy from her mother during her thirteenth birthday. Alex uses the book as an indirect way of communicating the consequences of sex. However, like many times before the attempt to communicate comes off as cold and emotionless to Josie, which foreshadows issues concerning sex in the future.
2. Peter questions his mother on how her and Lewis came to be. Lacy advises him to share his heart and go for what he wants. Although, she provides Peter with hope she fails to let him know that if he does get rejected it doesn’t define him.
3. Lacy assumes Peter has developed a crush on girl after he takes an interest in how Lewis and her got together.
4. Sex is one of the most intimate actions between humans. As sexual interactions became a normal part of Josie and Matt’s relationship he began to feel entitled. Matt forced himself on to an intoxicated Josie without using protection, raping and endangering her. Personally, I fear for not only Josie’s physical safety but for how she values her life.
5. Peter gains confidence from his mother to ask Josie out through a sweet, cheesy email.
6. Courtney snoops through Josie’s mail and finds Peter’s message where he confessed his love to her. Instead of politely leaving Josie to handle the situation she sneakily emails her self and their schoolmates Peter’s email.
7. Josie couldn’t sleep due to her period being three days late and that there’s a possibility of her being pregnant.
8. Josie states “Popular kids don’t really have friends; they have alliances.” She implied people who are popular use pain and embarrassment of others to better themselves and don’t truly care who they hurt in the process. Josie fails to comprehend that she too appears and comes off just like her friends.
9. Josie pretends to laugh at Peter’s email and not care so she won’t jeopardize her popularity. If she were to be affected by someone whose social status is significantly lower it would cause tension and possibly make people tease her.
10. Peter keeps a picture of Josie and him in his locker of when they were younger. This shows how Peter might be in love with what Josie use to be and not who she came to be which will lead to major heartbreak.
11. Courtney converses with Peter and gives him false hope for his relationship with Josie. She does this for her own amusement because she knows Peter will most likely embarrass himself.
12. When Courtney confronted Peter she told him Josie reciprocates his feelings for her. In his excitement Peter doesn’t consider that Courtney could be lying and tries to hang out with her in the cafeteria.
13. Matt starts to recite words from Peters email and pulls down his pants to humiliate Peter for threating his relationship.
14. After the incident at school Peter ripped the picture of him and Josie out of his locker and urinated on it repeating the phrase fuck you all.
15. Josie looks up how to naturally terminate a pregnancy from home on the computer. She doesn’t want to go through the humiliation or drama of communicating with an adult as a result of desperation she looks into unhealthy ways of having a miscarriage.
16. Mr. Weatherhall, Peter’s neighbor, an old retired cop who seems to be set in his ways and is the stereotypical elderly man. Peter first enters his house to borrow gas for his lawn mower.
17. Joey used to tell Peter that Mr. Weatherhall hid a pistol in his flour and when he stops by the house to get gasoline he finds the gun in the sugar canister instead.
18. Josie finally confesses to Matt that she is pregnant, he responds by acting childish and pretends that everything is okay. Matt keeps a mentality that he is better than everyone else and is unstoppable which causes him to stay immature.
19. Peter steals Mr. Weatherhall’s gun while he is in the basement.
20. Josie realizes she has had a miscarriage yet still doesn’t seem to grasp the serious of the situation and almost comes off a bit like Matt.
21. Lewis receives a phone call from a gun shop saying that his bullets were ready but he didn’t order any.
22. Matt is infuriated and embarrassed with Josie for showing up before his big game but quickly becomes overjoyed when he finds out Josie had started her period.
23. Alex tries to hide her developing relationship with Patrick, the detective, from her daughter Josie.
24. Selena contemplates if stereotypes of what boys and girls are merely deprive us all from what we truly need and makes people into unholy things.
25. Patrick the detective and now Alex’s love interest catches Josie in a lie. She had been secretly visiting Matt’s grave as a way to cope with how everything is changing. Even though, Matt is extremely abusive he was the only stable person that declared his love to and need for Josie’s presence.
26. Lacy lies to through her teeth to a saleswoman who assumes that she is preparing for her kids to leave the nest.
27. Initially Peter acts almost cynical toward his father Lewis who had neglected to visit him for six months. As time went on Lewis just was completely honest with Peter, which seemed to start to rebuild their relationship.
28. During the preparation for the trial Drew tries to lie about his interactions with Peter. However, he is quickly set into place by Patrick who was infuriated that someone could go through a tragedy and still not has the decency to be honest with everyone and themselves.
29. Alex reflects on a memory where she briefly stopped paying attention to Josie who then fell and almost downed to death when she was three. She tells her daughter this for her to understand that she too has moments she can’t forget. Additionally, she used that specific memory to show how Josie is the most important aspect in her life even if she neglects to say it out loud.
30. A support group showed up to Peter’s trial because they felt a connection to what he went through on a daily basis. The group was BVA or the bullied victims of America.
31. Diana’s opening statement paints Peter as a classic serial killer who deserves nothing more than what’s coming to him. She does this by using pictures of the victims and goes into detail on how he planned out the crime. The intention is to make the jury feel as if Jordan’s argument is pointless and to almost dehumanize Peter until you only want revenge.…...

Case 19

...Case 19: FreshDirect Is It Really Fresh?* With a bold promise on its website entry page, FreshDirect claimed, “Our food is fresh, our customers are spoiled…. Order on the web today and get next-day delivery of the best food at the best price, exactly the way you want it, with 100 percent satisfaction guaranteed.”1 However, recently many consumers have questioned the freshness of the food delivered by FreshDirect. Since online shopping does not give the chance for customers to feel and choose the products themselves, they must rely completely on FreshDirect to select the food for them. This notion has not appealed to some customers. Operating out of its production center in Long Island City, Queens, FreshDirect offers online grocery shopping and delivery service to more than 300 zip codes in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau County, Riverdale, Westchester, select areas of Staten Island, New Jersey, and parts of Connecticut. FreshDirect also offers pickup service at its Long Island City facility, as well as corporate service to selected delivery zones in Manhattan and summer delivery service to the Hamptons on Long Island. When it was launched in July 2001 by Joseph Fedele and Jason Ackerman, FreshDirect pronounced to the New York area that it was “the new way to shop for food.” This was a bold statement given that the previous decade had witnessed the demise of numerous other online grocery ventures. However, the creators of FreshDirect were confident in the success...

Church Minutes

...What is that? What is it? Where is it coming from?” (The women began to hear the voices. They began to hear the rumble, and they began to see a crowd of women gathered at the crossroads.) SCENE 2: Answering the Call. (Women enter coming from various directions to the middle of the crossroad, which leads to a large conference hall) Narrator (Heather): Women from all time periods, past to our present day, begin to fill the room eager to begin this great meeting. (Already, a choir was assembled and old Negro spirituals were being sung, hands were waving, as voices lifted and poured over the women as they found their way to their seats. Mahalia Jackson is leading the song, “How I Got Over” with the choir. Choir sings for about three minutes and music slowly fades out.) Aung Gert (Angela Doyne): Well, Good evening! I’m Aunt Gert….I’m 100 years old and I’ve been through the storm and through the rain. I’ve seen it all…ain’t nothing you can tell me now…that will surprise me much…. Barbara Jordan (Helen Boone): Yes, I agree Ms. Abrams. “Education remains the key to both economic and political empowerment.” As I, Senator Barbara Jordan, said many years ago, “This is the great danger America faces. That we will cease to be one nation and become instead a collection of interest groups; city against suburb, region against region, individual against individual…each seeking to satisfy private wants.” Alas, we are at that crossroad. I am here because, “I believe that women......

19 Pinckney

...19 Pinckney St. Edward Alexander has $80,000 of his own equity, which he hopes to leverage through investment in real estate. He found a 4-unit building on 19 Pickney St. in Boston. Our analysis showed he should obtain $450,000 through a 20-year mortgage at 8%, as was offered to him by Sarah Harris, in order to invest in this property. The Property The property is located at 19 Pinckney St. in the back slope of the historical neighborhood of Beacon Hill in Boston. It is a 4-unit residential building, which a fire has destroyed in 2003, and thereafter only the structural shell remained. An architect started renovating it but stopped in the middle due to lack of funds. The asking price is set at $350,00. A contractor priced the remaining work at $165,000 and said it would be completed within 6 months; thereafter, the building will have three 2-bedroom apartments and one 1-bedroom apartment on the top floor. Alexander estimates that he would be able to do the reconstruction himself and it would take him only 4 months. This assumption seems unrealistic given Alexander’s full-time job and lack of experience in construction. It is also assumed that if he insisted to do so, lenders will be hesitant to finance his project. Therefore, total approximate cost of the renovated building is $515,000. Location This location has been demonstrating rising property values. Newbury Street, Financial District and the Boston Commons are within less than a 15-minutes walk. Potential......

Chapter 19

...Chapter 19 Initial Public Offerings, Investment Banking, and Financial Restructuring ANSWERS TO END-OF-CHAPTER QUESTIONS 19-1 a. A closely held corporation goes public when it sells stock to the general public. Going public increases the liquidity of the stock, establishes a market value, facilitates raising new equity, and allows the original owners to diversify. However, going public increases business costs, requires disclosure of operating data, and reduces the control of the original owners. The new issue market is the market for stock of companies that go public, and the issue is called an initial public offering (IPO). b. A rights offering occurs when a corporation sells a new issue of common stock to its existing stockholders. Each stockholder receives a certificate called a stock purchase right, or right, giving the stockholder the option to purchase a specified number of the new shares. The rights are issued in proportion to the amount of stock that each shareholder currently owns. c. A public offering is an offer of new common stock to the general public; in other words, an offer in which the existing shareholders are not given any preemptive right to purchase the new shares. A private placement is the sale of stock to only one or a few investors, usually institutional investors. The advantages of private placements are lower flotation costs and greater speed, since the shares issued are not subject to SEC registration. ...
